Just got DISH and can no longer record DVD's in correct aspect ratio.

I just switched from ORBY to DISH (for obvious reasons) and have noticed I can no longer record DVD's on my old Panasonic DVD recorder in the correct aspect ratio. I had no problem doing this on ORBY, but have aspect ratio problems when I record DVD's on DISH. Is there anyway to get around this or do I just have to live with the fact that my old Panasonic will never be able to record in the correct aspect ratio in HD on DISH? I have no problems with aspect ratios on DISH except when I am trying to record DVD's. The aspect ratio is fine at all other times.

I don't know, but I would imagine you are using a different output on your Dish receiver (which is what by the way?) vis a vis your ORBY and/or a different setting on the output or on your DVD recorder. I used to record 16/9 SD pictures all the time from my 722 (TV1 output) to a Hava Platinum.

Might be a setting on the dish receiver where you set the aspect ratio for the tv

He is not using composite if he is recording in HD...thats a big if

He must be using composite out, and with the latest generation of Dish receivers (Hopper, Wally) he will not get the proper aspect ratio.

It happens whenever a customer has an older TV w/o HDMI and uses those.

Yes, I am just using red, white, yellow as my output and I know I am not getting true HD, but that doesn't bother me, I just want to get the right aspect ratio. I just don't get when I am watching through those cables the aspect ratio changes and when I am watching normally it's fine.

You will not be able to get the proper aspect ratio. Unless you used some 3rd party device to "fix" it, if such a thing exists.

The TV1 output of a 722 did have the proper aspect. But kind of a pain to get one of those added to your acct.

Well, that sucks. Why in hell did Dish do that? As I said above, I did this all the time w/the composite output of my 722. That only worked on TV1 outputs, though. Dish prevented the TV2 outputs from putting out widescreen on TV2 long after none of us had 4:3 TVs. . That is, unless you put it in solo mode in which case both composite outputs looked great.

What is the exact failure mode using the composite outputs of a Hopper or Wally? Does it force a letterbox or worse on the signal? If there is no letterbox but instead just looks like anamorphic widescreen, I had a quick utility called dvdpatcher that fixed the aspect ratio ex post facto.

Yeah, I made many a recording from HD programs on the SD outputs of that old 722. The results were as good as a DVD (which is also SD).

When DISH switched the Hopper from the original software to the carbon ui the composite output was switched from anamorphic to non-anamorphic.
Only reason I can think of is it must have some thing with the display driver.

Yeah, it set up to work with 4x3 TVs... not sure the logic there.

Yeah, a big dissappointment I learned the hard way LONG ago with Hopper DVR's. If I recall in my many attempts, setting the output o 4:3 did NOT work because it would change the HDMI output for a 4:3 HDTV, not the SD outputs. HOWEVER, that was a really long time ago. Has this changed today? Can one set one of the 4:3 output and get proper aspect ratio for the SD outputs?

I use an old Replaytv to record off my 221k.Record the HD channel, which outputs letterbox from the 221k.Then I use the size button on my Sony tv remote til I get the right picture,it will expand top to bottom without chopping the sides off.It's certainly not HD but it's fine for me.

I have seen some TV's that do a wonderful job with the size button and I can't imagine why all TV's don't have them. I recently bought a Hisense and was shocked that it will not change the size of DVD's. It will only change the size of the picture when you are watching cable or some kind of broadcast TV. I do have other TV's and they will be able to make my future DVD-R's watchable.

I second that suggestion. My most recent 4K TV has no component inputs, so I bought an adapter (below) that has been on all the time and has worked great for 2 years. It is serving my basement TV from a H3. My family room 4K TV is on the HDMI output.

I just bought something like it, a RCA AV to HDMI HD Converter Composite Video Adapter with a HDMI Output and it didn't work is there any point in buying a similar one with a HDMI Input instead because they do make those?
