Here we go...here is Channel 9's link that tells the story about the tower coming down. KWTV

"The tower stands at more than 1,572 feet tall, around 300 feet higher than the Empire State Building, making it at one time the world's tallest manmade structure. So tall In fact, Griffin decided against the call letters KOMA and instead chose KWTV, standing for “world's tallest video”.

Why are they taking it down? Safety issue (metal fatigue) etc?

One of the local 1400ft CBC towers here was decommissioned and they moved all the television broadcasting downtown onto one of the skyscrapers maybe 600' . Nothing but interference to other wireless services, and RF radiation levels are like 100x higher in nearby buildings now. Stupid thing is now after spending several million in moving/replacing all that equipment now the original tower is still standing and they are leasing it out to several FM broadcast stations...

Up here the main broadcasters seem to only be interested in areas that already have cheap (or free) basic cable rather than serving an audience that does not have access to cable and reliable internet in more rural areas. Large towers are relatively safe if maintained, and already bought and paid for. Guess their shareholders are not happy unless the company is over leveraged in debt trying to pay for new infrastructure that reduces their audience... </soapbox>

Doesn't surprise me that the CBC (gov't) would do something stupid. Their motto is "we will save money no matter what it costs".
