Does anyone know what the plans are for Dish to expand the HD market for local channels? I am in the Biloxi/Gulfport Ms area and Dish is the only provider that does not have locals in HD. As I replace TV's this is becoming more of an issue as we still watch alot of network shows. I would like to upgrade from 922 to Hopper as we now have 3 HD TVS but as of now OTA is not available and it is not really the answer for me anyway.

I mean this nicely, switch providers. If all the others have them in HD pick one that has most of what you want. You could try writing to Dish and asking, but I doubt you will get an answer other than "We are always working on getting the locals in HD" Blah Blah Blah.....

Stop waiting and "move" to either New Orleans or Mobile. ;) Obviously these won't give you your actual DMA, but it will give you the networks in HD, and allow you to move to a Hopper. If you stay with your 922, or wait until the Hopper has the OTA dongle, you could still get your locals OTA in HD as well as the New Orleans or Mobile channels.

I do not know about Mobile, but New Orleans has 11 local channels with 8 in HD on Dish. :)

4 WWL (CBS) HD
6 WDSU (NBC) HD
8 WVUE (FOX) HD
12 WYES (PBS) HD
20 WHNO (LeSea Broadcasting)
26 WGNO (ABC) HD
32 WLAE (PBS) HD
38 WNOL (The CW) HD
42 KGLA (Telemundo)
49 WPXL (ION Television)
54 WUPL (My Network TV) HD

RSNs (I suppose this would also change your RSNs):

416 Fox Sports Southwest (HD part-time)
421 Cox Sports Television (HD part-time)

I am not sure if your area would be covered to get these.

You would also be able to get your locals OTA with the 922 or by having having to switch TV inputs for now if upgrading to the Hopper. You may want to see if you are able to pick up one of the other markets if you are making a move.

Chances are that the remaining local markets without HD locals will get them after Echostar 16 launches in August.
Does anyone at DIRT or Scott know for sure that this will happen? I have been holding off getting 2 Hoppers and 2 Joeys until we get locals in HD. OTA is not as important to me as PTAT and Auto Hop. I have also thought of moving to Dallas once OTA is available on the Hopper. What would the Guide look like with Dallas HD locals and Lubbock OTA locals?

Nobody knows for sure yet. However, looking at the list of markets that don't have HD locals: http://www.satelliteguys.us/hopper-zone/279331-here-list-markets-will-not-support.html , most of those markets are in the central or eastern part of the U.S., so those markets would be able to see the 61.5 orbital (that's where echo 16 is suppose to launch for sure). My guess (and again this is just a guess) is that after echo 16 launches, most of those non-HD markets will get their HD locals launched on 61.5 and therefore become Eastern Arc markets. Again, that's just my guess, but we'll see what happens.

It really bothers me that we have to "Guess" if/when DISH plans to offer these markets HD locals.

I'm not sure why DISH can't/won't clearly state what/when the plans are for offering HD to these markets.

If they have no plans to offer HD in some/all of these markets.....then fine.... the customers can look to other providers.

Just bothers me why DISH cannot/will not tell us what the plan is.

This is why I "moved" us to the Dallas DMA. Dish is the only provider that does not offer locals in HD.

They used to inform the retailers of their plans. I'm pretty sure all is on hold until the new spot beam satellite is launched and operational. I'm guessing probably October at the earliest for additions, assuming agreements are in place for carriage.
