Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

I also can't help but wonder if he started freaking out and wiggled out of the restraint. This story isn't written very well, big shocker there, but it looks like he fell out when it was doing its initial climb. I've never ridden this particular coaster but I've never felt like I was in danger of falling out at this point in the ride....going down the other side is another story.

Even more puzzling, a news summary I read described it not as a death, but as "an incident". "Incident" doesn't seem strong enough to cover a death.

Some more of the story is coming out. The restraints were acting weird right before the accident.
Personally, if MY restraint kept unlocking itself, I'd get off the ride.
Obviously he was ejected when it was doing one of those corkscrew loops...the pics of the riders getting on on that incline is where the ride was stopped, not where the accident happened.

On a side note. Can you IMAGINE having to walk down those steps more than 100 ft up!!

I've walked over a gang plank of a mine shaft 1700' deep without fall protection back in the day that was bad enough. (I inspected fall protection and had my own harness and lanyard before retiring)Riding ski lifts didn't bother me, but I respect heights...

I've gone up a couple of those lifts in the Gatlinburg area...going UP wasn't a problem because you were looking at the mountainside. Going down was another thing all together because it felt like I would fall a LOT further since you were looking out at the valley floor.
I guess at an actual ski lift this wouldn't be a problem since you would ski down.

The thing I look at in this other than his death is, How IS the restraint system set up for these cars ... this is always something I look into Before riding a Coaster ... (I have read plenty between Cedar Point, Six Flags ( by Chicago) and Kings Island as well as one out in the Los Angeles area)
The design of the seats in this case in my opinion is poor.
You hop up in the seat and a bar comes across your lap .... thats it ? In this case yes.

Had the locking system been not working for that row, they should have blocked off use in that row ... if it was more than that row, it should have been shut down

I believe these type at Cedar Point has that seat, but also has a restraint that comes over your head .... that would be what I would EXPECT on a ride like this ... at the Very least, have an actual Seat belt to be fastened ...

Way back in the day, I think it was the Blue Streak at CP, had a bar that came down, but not all that far and it also had Seat belts, we never wore the seatbelts, but that ride doesn't go upside down or any loops of any kind ... also wasn't all that fast or high.

I'm sure one of the rides at CP has this type of set up, but I think it has other restraints as well, that may be the one that has the over head bar come down over your chest ... I know one of them I do not ride because of the way it comes over your shoulders, I end up banging my head on the shoulder restraint thru out the ride ... others have a different shoulder restraint that attaches at the top of the seat and doesn't effect your head .

Prayers go out to him and his Friends and Family .

There is still a lot that hasn't come out yet. This coaster has seats that are 4 per row. Most of the ones I've been on, each seat's restraint is independent from the others, so one could fail without it affecting the entire row.
I simply cannot imagine the terror that went through this man's mind when he realized he was being thrown out.

We went to Dollywood a couple weeks ago and one of my daughters talked me into going on the Drop Line. It's one of those tower thing where it lifts you 200 ft in the air, rotates you around and then drops you. I have NEVER regretted getting on a ride so much in my life!! To top it off, the people manning the ride pranked us by coming on the speaker and said "okay guys, we're going to drop you in 10 seconds" then dropped us immediately. Did I get on it a second time? No. Will I ever get on it again? No.

We use to have that at Cedar Point as well ... I never bothered ... it's much safer than going up a Telephone pole and cut out, grabbing the pole trying to secure yourself enough to gaff back in ...
Pole Climbing school was fun .

Go to the top of the pole and get the money that is up there and come down .. safely. :)

I remember pole climbing school. Yes it was fun. We didn't have money up there though.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

The first roller coaster I ever road was one of those. I was terrified but I was with my friends and didn't want to wuss out. While in line I kept looking at the guys running the ride.....few teeth, not that bright looking....I just KNEW my life was over.
