NEW YORK (AP) - MetroStars forward Clint Mathis was fined $500 Wednesday by Major League Soccer for ``conduct unbecoming a professional athlete.''
Mathis got into a verbal confrontation with fans following his team's 2-0 loss at home to New England in a playoff game last Saturday.
``Mathis' fine reflects his failure to leave the field expeditiously after the game and his verbal, but not physical, confrontation of hecklers,'' the league said in a statement.
