SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. is shutting down Internet chat services in most of its markets around the world and limiting the service in the United States to help reduce criminal solicitations of children through online discussions.

Seems to me like there will be more people using other chat services after this, therefore mroe to be found on the same chat service than before as a result.

I wonder how the progress of having one common chat service is going? I remember hearing that they were going to try having a chat service where those on yahoo messenger can chat with those on msn messenger and so forth.

I know there are messengers like trillian where you can have all the messengers on one chat service but this would be different. This would be more like those that have different telephone services still being able to talk to each other on it would refer to the messengers.

Are they shutting down messengers or chat services?

I heard two reports. One that they were going to only shut down these services overseas and two, that they were going to shut them down here as well, in which I did not know whether to believe the second one I heard. I know MSN Messenger is still working. On chat.msn.com it says that MSN Chat will soon be a subscription only service to help protect against spam.

Sounds to me that this is more of a way for them to make more money and it will probably not be all that successful seeing that there are so many other places that you can go and chat for free. This will just help the other places to chat to thrive even more and you will find even more people in one place.

Here is an article that explains it a bit bettewr.

I would not hold my breath waiting for one chat service.
