The Red Sox have actually gotten better than expected performances from several position players: Ross, Aviles, Saltalamacchia, Sweeney, Middlebrooks, Nava and now Posednick. They have also gotten better than expected results from fourth starter Doubront and third alternate closer Aceves.
On the downside, you have prolonged major injuries to all-stars Ellsbury and Crawford and their closer, Andrew Bailey, and inexplicable, total discombulations by three pitchers: Buchholz, Bard and Melancon.
I think, or at least hope, that the worst is over for their pitching. Buchholz was outstanding in his most recent starts, Beckett is pitching like an all-star again, and since there is nothing physically or mechanically wrong with Lester, then expect him to deliver his typical career numbers for the remainder of the season. All that remains is for them to find a fifth starter. Dice-K gave up four runs in six innings Saturday. I don't know if he is any better than that.
The American league is a tough league to earn a wild card spot in this year, even with there being two of them, because you have the Yankees and Rays in the East, and the Angels are going to win 95 or so games in the west. The Red Sox could have a good year and still not get a wildcard with 90-something wins.
