The Red Sox could sure use a third baseman like Kevin Youkilis right about now...

Youkilis named AL Player of Week
Scott Powers

Chicago White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday. Youkilis had 11 hits in 23 at-bats for a .478 average with three home runs, 10 RBIs, seven runs, a .571 on-base percentage and .913 slugging...

Youlilis's 13 game Chicago White Sox production of 3 home runs, 9 runs scored and 14 RBI to go along with a .347 batting average project to a 162 game season of 37 home runs, 112 runs scored, and a Hack Wilson-like 174 RBI!

The MLB All-Star Game ratings are not what they once were.

To put it in perspective- 30 years ago, the 1982 Midsummer Classic at Montreal got a 25.0 rating.

Last year's game got a 6.9 rating.

The obvious excuse is 'There are more alternatives,' but the game still got steady double-digit ratings up until 2001.

Hmmm, what happened in 2001 to turn people off to the game? Wasn't that the year of the "tie"?

What happened?

He stated...and mind you, he is VERY good friends with A-Rod., 'that because A-Rod ADMITTED to performance enhancing drugs, that there should some skepticism about anything he does.'

Nothing nasty...nothing mean... but the truth and how 99% of the public whether media or not, believe it.

And because of that...they banned him. Yes, the Yankees ownership think they are bigger than baseball....

I've said it before but some don't agree with me. The younger generation don't have an interest in baseball like we did. And it doesn't help when games go on and on . 5 plus hours etc.

REG-GIE also stated that Don Sutton, Kirby Puckett, Jim Rice, Gary Carter, Phil Niekro and Bert Blyleven don't belong in the HOF, and Andy Pettitte does once he's retired. LMAO!!!

I absolutely agree with this. When I was a kid, we were out all day in the summer playing baseball, only taking a break to eat. I look around at my local ball fields (and there are a lot), and I swear I can see tumbleweeds blowing across the diamond. Sad really.

As far as TV goes, I think it's a combination of too many distractions and over saturation of games on the air. I remember when NBC's Saturday GOTW and ABC's Monday Night Baseball were actual events.

Yeah that was the only time to see games on tv for the most part. Every once in a while they had a special game, like when Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb's record.

Well... I didn't say he was sane.;) I said it was a stupid PR move from the the Yankees and their thinking that they should not be criticized... LOL!

Include me in this. As the old saying, 'too much of a good thing is never good'

I don't remember games being over 5 hours long when I went. That's another problem they have .

I remember watching that game with my Dad. I also remember the two networks following Rose when he was chasing Joe DiMaggio/56. Great stuff!! :)

I have that game on DVD from the original game broadcast. I had it originally on Beta. ;)

What are your biggest ASG memories? I have a few.....

1999- Ted Williams comes out in a cart at Fenway Park, and is then surrounded by players from both sides at the mound

1999- Fenway favorite Pedro Martinez strikes out Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Jeff Bagwell over the first two innings

1983- Angels Fred Lynn hits a grand slam at Comiskey Park as the AL ends a long losing streak to the the NL

1979- Pirates Dave Parker guns down the tying running at the plate in the bottom of the 9th at Seattle's Kingdome

1990- remembered more for the long rain delay at Wrigley Field, and CBS decision to air Rescue 911 during the delay (can you imagine NBC ever doing that??)

I understand Reggie's opinions regarding most of those players. There are now a lot more players who have "Hall-of-Fame cumulative numbers" who were never dominant players in their prime, but have them only because the bigger paychecks make it worth their while to hang around for half a dozen years than comparable players did three or four decades or more ago.

As far as the A-Roid flap is concerned, Reggie is being paid nice money to promote the image of the Yankees, and A-Roid has $30 million in "marketing bonuses" written right into his contract for reaching home-run milestones from 660 to 763. Reggie is entitled to his opinions, but the Yankees are entitled to pay whomever they want whatever they want to market their brand, and they are entitled to be pissed when their paid spokesman publicly undermines A-Roid who they are marketing his pursuit of home run milestones.

I've got an I.Q. of 160!

- Reggie Jackson

Out of what? A thousand?

- Mickey Rivers

I'm the straw that stirs the drink

If I played in New York, they'd name a candy bar after me.

Then the Yankees are stupid. You do not pay a "spokesman" to 'speak his mind' ..and then bar him when he does EXACTLY what he was hired to do in the 1st place.

I like the Pete Rose bowl over of Ray Fosse

That's my favorite All Star game. I was a huge Parker fan.

I got into a HUGE "disagreement" with a Mets fan over this game because his "god" was Lee Mazzilli fan. He STILL thinks Mazzilli was the "overwhelming MVP of that game". LOL!

I too was a HUGE Dave Parker fan. I loved him even more when he came to Cincinnati.
