Movie star ratings, what do they mean? (HBO Free Preview)

With the HBO and Cinemax free preview this weekend, I'm looking to record some movies. If you pull up the info, each movie is rated with stars, I've seen * up to *** and also **+. I have no idea how many stars this is out of or what the plus sign means. Does anyone know?

Maximum is four stars (****). A "+" is equal to 1/2 star.
Example: **+ indicates a rating of two and one-half stars.

more stars...perception is better movie....according to whom, I do not know. I have watched movies with 1 star and been very happy w/ it.....

This is a consensus of critics rating. They can vary up to 1.5 stars.
**** See it again! Hitchcock, Kubrick, or other classic.
***+ See it if you cannot recite the plot.
*** A good view.
**+ Pretty good.
** Average to dull, kill some time.
*+ Only if you are desperate.
* The critic walked out.

My take. It's a two-pong rating:

Men:
4 Stars: Excellent, a lot of action explosions etc, i.e. Gladiator, The Replacement Killers
3 Stars: Very good, some minor technical issues, lighting, direction etc.
2 Stars: So-so, bad acting, slow script,
1 star: Stinker, slow and boring plot i.e. Under the Tuscan Sun, the Hours

Women:

4 Stars: Excellent, no explosions or senseless violence i.e. Under the Tuscan Sun, the Hours
3 Stars: very good, but could have been slightly better: Bridges of Madison County
2 Stars: It was ok, movie had some violence and some explosions:
1 Star: Stinker, way to violence, senseless killing, i.e. Gladiator, The Replacement Killers

I would have to adjust your ratings just a bit

4 Stars- Lots of action, suspense, great PQ, but it must have lots of exposed BOOBs to be a true 4 star for men
