Is this a reasonable use for a muffin fan? It is blowing down
into the receiver over the hottest area.

I also read somewhere here about temp info being supplied
in the diagnostics menu but as far as I can tell it's not
available in my 222K.
Thanks

yes but...

the cooler ambient air being forced down by the fan will overcome
the naturally rising heat from the components. I just wish that
temp reading diagnostic option would work for me.

Temperature info is in Menu+6+3+counters+pagesdown, at least on the 722.
There are 3 numbers: min max average over some unknown period, possibly the latest reboot.

Actually the many vent holes on the top of the 722K (and some other DishPro boxes: 50X's, 301, 311, 322) are sufficient to allow the heat to rise out of the box, provided you don't put something on top that covers the holes and prevents the heat from escaping.

The problem boxes with heat are the ViP DVR models that are solid on top and a few side slots and vents on the bottom (where the fan is located) that don't allow for as much heat to escape. If those units are in tight quarters, then a heat build-up problem can occur and additional solutions can make a big difference. I use casters on the feet to allow heat to escape and air to flow through the bottom, and anything placed on top of the box is also on casters so that the heat can escape the from the solid top of the DVR and not heat up the unit on top of it, and it works great.

I really don't think you need the fan for the 222K. The normal operating temp is over 100 degrees anyway, and it should be performing well, for a 722K, that is. It would be nice of the ViP DVR's had all those holes on top; then we wouldn't need all the casters.

Lotsa folks have tried stuff to cool ViP DVRs, much of which is captured in that tread KAB linked above. One caveat I learned from using a fan blowing down into the unit (probably applies for any forced air cooling however) is the rapid build-up of dust. Keep an eye on that. A dust coating on a hot component like the Broadcom chips is even worse than no added cooling at all...!

VIP222K and la fan

Due to a very well vented case extra cooling is probably
not warranted. However I did cut the fan voltage to slow it down a bit
and flipped it to suck air out. Comment regarding dirt was rite-on.
It appears the 222K diagnostics are different since there is no way to
look at internal temps. The pic shows as far as I can go in this menu.
Thanks for all of the comments, am learning a little bit at a time.

tnx for pgup & dwn tip

I would think not since the 222k does not have a harddrive.
Its the HD temps that the receivers diagnostics give.

I would have never guessed to use pg-up and pg-dwn but that worked and
gave me 10 screens of diagnostic mumbo jumbo none of which addressed
temp. Temp doesn't seem to be an issue but I have all these great little
muffin fans. Maybe I'll throw together a hover craft:o)
