n00b HD DVR question

Just setup a HD DVR and playing with rewind/pause/forward etc.

After a pausing or rewinding and then skipping forward how the heck do I know when I'm watching live TV!

Is there a button to press or an on-screen message that indicates when I'm watching live TV?

press the FF button then the one above it. The Arrow with the line at the end. That will bring you to live TV
