Need Help with external hard drive

I am new to the external hard drive thing. Have a few questions.

1) Can recordings be transferred while I am watching tv?

2) Around how long does it take?

3) DVR that I have is going out, replacement is on the way. Do I just transfer to external and when the new DVR gets here transfer it right back?

4) Does the Hard Drive always need to be connected to the DVR?

I am new to this as you can tell. Thank you in advance for your patience.

2) depends on the size, 30 min. programs about 9 minutes...

Do both DVR's need to be activated?
Do I transfer from old one to external hard drive, call to activate other then transfer back to new one?
Or does it not matter?

I plan on using the external hard drive as a library for HD Movies
Just as one would with the shelve that most of us have full of dvd's
Basically, just use it when I want to see a HD Movie, that way I keep the DVR just to watch recordings and delete.

Its the account that is activated for the external hard drive and all your DVR's on your account will then work

When they activate the new one it will be on your account and will read the EHDD.
Old to EHDD, then activate new one.
Yes as they will kill your old one so you can send it in... RMA it.
