New ad - 120 channels HD

I recorded the Houston - Air Force football game today and watched it earlier tonight. There was a commercial for Dish Network. The commercial had a screen showing 120 channels of HD. I replayed it and did not see the "up to 150 channels" in that commercial as I had seen in earlier ads. Any one else seen this ad?

Nope. But I did watch the game. I let my attention stray when the commercial came on, and only noted at the end of it that it seemed to be a new one. I also watched the first 3 quarters of the LSU-Georgia Tech game (at the end of which LSU was leading 38-3) but didn't see the Dish commercial at all in that one. I'm sure it will be on many times in the next week or so.

And after all, there's not much point in saying "up to 150 HD channels by the end of the year" now, is there? As Charlie noted in the last chat, Dish Network tapped out at 122 due to a series of unfortunate circumstances. (My characterization, not his.):D

Yeah, but they do not have 120 HD channels. Maybe they should make a New Year's resolution to start telling the truth.

I wonder how many true national HD channels Direct, Comcast, VIOS, Time Warner, etc. has compared to Dish.

My figuring is they have about 65 true national HD channels.

Yes I saw the ad last night myself.

Thanks, Scott, I was thinking I needed to go back to school and learn to count-

I've been pretty happy with Dish Network all year but last night I counted up the channels that list as "HD" and not counting all those billboard sports banner channels I get 78 nationals. They barely made 50% of their claim of 150 by the end of the year. Guess they missed their target by a long shot. I'll bet they'll be right on time with the rate increase.
BTW- I did count the listings of PPV channels in HD in the 78 number I got.

Except that it was "up to 150", not "will have 150". So according to my calculations, they were 100% correct.

Counting the same way Scott G. did, I think I found the same 65 and DirecTv had 67. This was a few weeks ago.

Counting the way Dish counts, I think I found 115, after which they put up another 8. That would be the 123 referenced above. Of course, counting the way Dish counts also increases DirecTv's count, to something like 135 I believe. I think the difference is DirecTv has more RSNs.

Someone also a few weeks ago posted the possible additions. I think there are about 25 or so "real" HD channels which could be added, some of which probably only provide upconverted standard definition fare. If you delete a few of the HD channels such as FoxNews, Fox Business, and ESPN U which apparently won't be added for business (money) reasons, the honest fact to me seems to be that Dish will be extremely hard pressed to raise the 65 number to more than 95 by the end of 2009. Even that will be difficult unless Dish can get carriage rights to many more of the Sho, HBO, Max, and Starz offerings. But that's just my view; I could be wrong.
