HI all, new to this site, but I am going to jump right in and ask for advise with a problem that a fellow tech has called me on. He has installed numerous standard receivers and they show no signal, but yet checking for signal strength at the receiver end, has been high 90's...yet when receiver is hooked to this line no signal is found...I find it hard to believe that on both occasions taking 6 to 7 receivers off his truck, that they all may be bad...can a substandard electrical service be the cause of this or is there maybe another explanation that we are not seeing... Thank you for checking this out and hope to hear if anyone else may have encountered this situation... Fast

He installed receiver in the living room and got the same results, yet when the hd receiver was installed in the set up programmed in properly with no loss of signal strength...our supervisor told him to change the LNB, but taking this into consideration... don't think we would get a high signal if this was the issue...could be wrong, not sure how to troubleshoot this issue...Thanks for the response...

did he use a switch like a 6x8 switch?

if not using that, could be a bad LNB.

I stopped onsite to see if I could be a possible help...Checked signal with bird dog at both rooms signal strength at both locations was the same (high 90's) that is what confused me as well...no shorting that I could see, there again would you get a high signal strength with a bad LNB, with the birddog and not with the receiver? This issue puzzles me, as I have yet to run into the same issue, but I would like to be able to conquer if this were to arize on any of my installs...have no clue on how to remedy this problem, and am open to all suggestion, Thank you again for all you input, ears , ( or should I say eyes ) are open if you can help out here.........thanks so much for taking the time to check this out, much appreciated.....

By the way it is a KA/KU dish and four lines run to a ground block and then three into the home...again..no clue what may be causing this issue....thanks again so much for your input.....

try for once taking the ground block off and trying it with a barrel and see if you get the same deal. if so, just swap out a LNB and see if it does the trick.

as a tech on a service call, you gotta try one after the next til you find the problem..

to me still thinking a ground wire is touching the conductor or bad cable/fittings on the KA/KU along with EVERY cable fitting you have and make sure there isnt a slight ground wire wrapped around the conductor.

i had a customer with this deal it would work and then it would quit working.. after 8 techs gone through, i found the ground wire wrapped around the conductor at the LNB screwing everything up after the switch.

is this KA/KU an andrew dish or a SLIMLINE?

was a slimline 5, spoke with the tech today and solved the problem disconnecting the hd/ dvr receiver and hooked up the standard before reconnecting the hd/dvr and said it programmed in fine, then hooked up the hd/dvr and both receivers were finally working. This made no sense to me, but if it worked I guess that's what counts... to me there is an issue underlying, that could be possibly be an electrical problem, and/or an electronics problem with one of the receivers....not sure what to think of this issue.....Thanks again for all your suggestions and information you passed along....Fast

I doubt that the order that the recvr's are hooked up would have any bearing.
Curious, make sure your setting up the correct dish when going thru the Set up section.

I agree Jimbo, but I do feel this situation has something to do with the ancient electrical service that exsists in this home. The homeowner is having it rewired, because of the service is out of date...only a 60 amp service...The reason I think this is; I had an upgrade, installed the dish and installed the receiver...it would go back and forth from receiveing satellite info to searching for satellite...went back and forth numerous times, but would not program fully....moved the receiver to another room worked fine...installed again in first room and same thing occurred...was late at night, and the customer was starting to turn off lights and other electrical devices and as they were turning off these things the programming went faster and did finish and the receiver was working...Just to check this issue had customer turn devices back on and receiver did faulter...had also checked with team leads, and was told that there may be a grounding issue with the electrical service...warned the customer to have an electrician take a look at there service as advised by my supervisor... just an fyi of one instanse I ran into....I do very much appreciate the info though...Thanks, FAST

i have seen this a few times. I keep a $5 electrical outlet tester on my van to check for a bad circuit if I run into this!

Is that those litte testers that have the lights for polarity or is this a tester for voltage issues??? Thanks, Fast
