Newbie Trying to Decide how to Best Subscribe

Hi All,

I just moved into a home in Phoenix with a DTV Dish already installed and two coax lines running to most rooms. The dish looks like "MPEG4 Ku/Ka Dish Original AU9-S (4) Outputs" i saw on another site.

Question: I would like one HD DVR and three regular HD receivers, as much HD content as I can afford, but no need for NFL package. Should I buy receivers and have DTV activate, or take advantage of their current deals?

From reading the initial post, you're looking to sign up with 1 HD DVR and 3 HD boxes.

If you do this on your own, it will most likely run around $500.00 plus any additional unforeseen charges (maybe switches, an upgrade to SWM, or more coax runs).

I came up with the $500 amount by the following (if you do it on your own):
$200 for HD DVR
$100 each for the standard HD boxes ($300 total for these)

If D* does the install and you're a new customer, they usually throw in a HD DVR if you ask for it on sign up. That alone saves you $200. Also they will hook up everything, which may save you some money there too. I'm not sure if they'll provide you with any standard HD boxes at no charge. I wasn't able to get them at no charge myself, only the one HD DVR was included at no charge when I signed up.

I think either way when you sign up, you have the 2 year commitment (maybe someone else can verify).

You'll probably do better going with whatever deal you can work with Directv. You can't "buy" the newer receivers, all you do is pay a lease fee. Ownership remains with Direct. In any case, if you do purchase an older box, the monthly service fee is the same as the monthly lease fee, which includes service.
