hmmmmmmmm

sky angel canada is no more!!!!

I posted several weeks ago that the sky angel canada website was gone. People guesses it was maintenance etc.

this post was on another board and I think its worth reading.

Basically Skyangel realized that SHIFTV was also broadcasting porn! Well I personally told them that months ago and followed it up with some phone calls. bottom line is that they are now using that as an excuse for shutting down IPTV in canada with no warning while yet continuing to bill at least some of its subscribers!

If this is the true reason that skyangel canada shut down it is still a horrible way to do business. This is DECEMBER, they shut them off 2 months ago with no notice.

this is the other persons posted info:

Sky Angel IPTV is no longer available in Canada. It is almost impossible to find this out by searching the internet. I had a paid up subscription when in mid October the set top box could no longer get the TV channels (only radio) then eventually it said the box was not authorized. Phone calls and emails were not returned. They eventually followed through when I asked to stop the monthly automatic payments but without any explanation or refund for half a month of no service. This left me with a useless $120 set top box. After lots of searching I figured out what was going on and left an inquiry on the American website. The Canadian SkyAngel website became unavailable and on the American SkyAngel website they had removed all references to Sky Angel in Canada. Following is the response I received from SkyAngel on 03Dec2007:

"Thank you for contacting Sky Angel. Sky Angel had granted a Canadian company, ShifTV, the right to carry our service over their IPTV system in Canada. That company is now operating under a new name and new management and their business plan, which includes adult entertainment, is no longer compatible with ours. The parties have decided to terminate our technical agreement. We are currently seeking additional ways to provide Sky Angel programming again in Canada. Please feel free to check back to our Web site at ... for any further developments regarding this.

If you are a ShifTV subscriber to Sky Angel programming and have any questions about your service, you will need to contact them directly at 1-866-640-7938."

I feel sorry for the Canadians. According to the internet shiftv is the only IPTV provider in canada. sky angel can't reach them via DBs even if they did stay in the DBS business. These people now have useless equipment unless they want to subscribe to a different shiftv package.

Good point about glorystar, I hope its in my future. since I am a lifetime member I have been waiting for skyangel to actually cut me off before making a decision, dish would be less expensive initially due to owning the equipment already but glorystar would be cheaper in the long run with no monthly fees.

Is glorystar available in Canada?

There are several IPTV providers in Canada. As a matter of fact, I cannot see how any source could know how many exist unless there is some specific reporting to the government. Bell, CNW, Cogeco, MTS, Rogers, SaskTel, and Shaw are all listed as IPTV providers in Canada (through various sources).

fta glorystar ku band system,
can i use my dishnet work setup from skyangel ?

Glorystar is available in Canada.

Is glorystar available in Canada?

Glorystar is basically a Free to Air System with the ability to receive two satellites with one dish and preprogrammed for a group of religious channels. Free to Air satellite systems are readily available in Canada and Glorystar has a distribution/shipping location in Canada. When setting up Glorystar type systems in Canada, if I am very far North and signals are weak with rain fade (snow storm fade) becoming an issue I will use two dishes one pointed at each satellite then combine signals with the same DiSEqC switch Glorystar uses to combine signal from the two head LNB on the single dish. You can use their same preprogramed receiver and switch with an extra dish if needed.

For FTA / Glorystar ku band you will need a new system.

fta glorystar ku band system,
can i use my dishnet work setup from skyangel ?

None of the dish network equipment you have from skyangel is any help for receiving FTA ku band such as the Glorystar channels. You will need to purchase a new dish (36"), new LNBs, and a new receiver. You may be able to use the same wire which came from your old 18" dish to your old dish network receiver - depending upon whether you can still have line of sight from that location to the different satellites. The easiest (and probably about the least expensive) way is to get it all as a system. $199 + $35 shipping from Glorystar, including the special double LNB bracket, switch, all wires, and instructions preprogrammed for the Glorystar channels and even instructions for adding other channels.

Interesting story on ShifTV partner. Research and choose distribution partners.... carefully!

Another Anti-Piracy Effort North of the Border

As part of their ongoing anti-piracy push north of the border, DISH Network/EchoStar, NagraStar and Canada's Bell ExpressVu said the execution of civil search and seizure orders were made against David Fuss and Incredible Electronics, Ariza Technology and Electronics Wholesale, all in Toronto.

The companies said that earlier in the month they executed search and seizure orders of Fuss' property in order to preserve evidence for litigation. Large quantities of DISH Network receivers and access cards were recovered, said the companies. Also found during the order execution were Nagravision “embedded” free-to-air receivers, hard drives and business records disclosing the identities of Fuss' suppliers and customers, the companies claimed in a statement.

The companies alleged that Fuss supplied free-to-air receivers to piracy dealers and provided piracy software for FTA receivers through various Web sites.

The move was the latest in a series of enforcement actions by the companies in Canada, and is the culmination of several years of joint investigations conducted by the companies.

I'm lost here!

Does this mean porn was on the SA Canada IPTV boxes without paying for it or something? If the point is only that the company ALSO has porn subscriptions available that's a pretty stupid reason to break a contract.

Dish Network has offered a paid porn subscription for years, if not from the start. Didn't seem to be a problem all that time. If this is an example of Dominion's business practices it's little wonder they have a failed track record.

I believe an internet appliance such as an IPTV box could one day gain popularity, but only if it is considered as a means to internet viewing in general, not as a service specific paperweight should a programming package be eliminated. Due to logistics it is totally impractical to have numerous boxes to cover each specific programming package, but if I understand the issue here that's EXACTLY what SA is banking on and is also demanding limitations on what programming the company can sell to others. For my money that's just insane!

As I've said many times, this business model serves to only evangelize the already converted. If you REALLY wanted to evangelize then the Faith channels should be free & in the clear to any other subscription on the network, if not an unsubscribed box even. It's the only thing that makes Christian sense to me!!

This story reveals additional background on the defunct ShifTV service and partners.

Nothing to do with porn or Sky Angel...... just interesting reading for those who what to know more about what happens behind the scenes.

Free faith channels? SkyAngel should consider a business model where it would sell boxes and allow unsubscribed boxes to access a basic collection of faith channels. Features such as video on demand, viewing previous 48 hrs of programming, and secular channels could be sold as upgrades to those who wanted more than the basic religious channels.

I don't see too many non-Christians rushing out to subscribe to a religious programming package or to a secular package offered by a religious programming company.

SkyAngel could sell advertising to help fund this venture. Believe it or not, most Christians buy products. The company could easily write an advertising policy listing products which they would not advertise and content standards for the ads they did run.

if someone could just get the faith channels free.....who pays for the bandwidth? or would you propose giving the faith channels for free with a subscription to a larger package which included secular channels? honestly, the secular offerings on SA IPTV are not that great now. i do appreciate Fox News and Fox Business....Hallmark. I wish they would make a deal with ESPN...but i'm sure it would cost a fortune.

I pay for my own bandwidth when my ISP bill comes every month. :)

Are you assuming that there is a tremendous cost to the web distribution? After all, except for the Family channels SA doesn't pay a content fee. In fact, don't the ministries actually pay a fee to SA for inclusion? And Dish has several Christian channels that are free under public information.

So I suppose it would be beneficial to have all the applicable financial data available in hand, but the way it appears from the outside looking in the only reason the Faith channels have a fee attached is to maximize revenue. I just happen to think the profit model should be different so as to promote evangelism first and profits as a secondary concern.

I believe that SA has to pay for bandwidth on their end - that would be expensive!
Bob

And that's the real question. How expensive? Obviously it can't be cost prohibitive or ministries wouldn't have live feeds on their websites.

We don't know if or how much ministries pay to SA to be included. My blind guess though is that most of the revenue goes to administrative overhead and not much to the actual bandwidth. Then again, that could be bundled with a service contract for all the technical matters.

Again we don't too much know what's, what since SA is operating as a private company and we obviously had no input whatsoever in the process despite being legitimate stakeholders. But the result speaks to the actual aims of the company and is an indication that evangelism is not job 1, especially if they are truly nit picking over any other subscription services their technical provider may be selling. That's like boycotting the corner gas station for selling cigarettes & beer.

neulion is now broadcasting in Canada. Makes it a bit odd if "porn" were truly the reason for the sudden shut off of sky angel canada. You would think/hope that sky angel would offer their former canadian customers afree box and switch to neulion.

shif tv which was broadcasting sky angel IPTV in canada was also broadcasting porn. This was happening for months when all of a sudden one day canadians woke up one morning to no iptv. sky angel finally notified the subscribers after the fact and blamed the cut off on the "porn issue". meanwhile people were left with no service, useless boxes. To make matters worse their accounts were still being auto debited for the fees. I always wondered why the instant shut off, no warning etc.

Now that neulion has moved into Canada one would think/hope that sky angel would choose to honor their former contracts for IPTV service.

I was able to find no proof that ShifTV is still in business........ can someone prove otherwise?
