my brother in law still has one that still uses a card and is at least 10 years
old.shouldnt dish exchange this?will it work when everything switches to
mpeg4?

Most of the old receivers still work. Does he still have service? If not, DISH will likely provide new equipment with new service. If he does, he should have no problem upgrading to new equipment in exchange for a new commitment.

Don't worry about the switch to MPEG4 yet. Too much is still in the air, and anything you do now will turn out to be wrong. The better reason to switch is that he would like some of the newer features, such as HD or DVR.

The card may have to be replaced depending on how long since the receiver was last used. Mpeg4 receivers started about 2 1/2 years ago and currently only HD is used for mpeg4, Dish won't exchange it until all the sd channels switch over but that may not happen until sometime next year. The receiver will still work until the mpeg2 sd is shut off.

unit still works and is in use ,he is just to cheap to buy a new one, wants dish to give him a new one without a new contract? will he have to wait till it is a have to case before they will give him one?

What advantage is there to DISH to give him a receiver before he needs it? It costs them money and dosen't increase profit, come on Charlie is an accountant first then:shocked he is a good guy.:shocked

its a case to case basis, DN will only ask you for a contract if you're going to upgrade the rcvr to a higher but do you know the model of that rcvr that you wanted to be replaced?

Is this something that should concern those of us that are still receiving ONLY SD?

Will we be forced to upgrade our equip. to Mpeg4 hardware?

Maybe, eventually. Unless something changes.

There is currently a plan for something called eastern arc. It would be an mpeg-4 only service that uses a single dish. However, the old stuff will be around for some time, and if you are only SD and are happy with the channels you already have, your current setup will continue to work for years to come. They have too much invested in the installed base to ditch it overnight.
