I use a compaq iPAQ 3955 as a whole house home theater Infra-red remote control.

It doesn't have a whole lot of range(Like about 6-8 feet typical) but my 522 has a sensitive eye and it will control it to 12 feet.

I'd like to put a higher power (brighter) LED into the iPAQ for better distance controlling but there are so many to choose from.

Does anyone know about electronics enough to tell me what I could use? There are so many with different wavelengths (720-1500 nanometers), power outputs, etc.

I've been google-ing and found this place:
http://www.roithner-laser.com/LED_diverse.htm

It tells alot about IR LED's but I still need to figure out which type will work.

Radio-Shaft has one for $1.79 but it is only 7.3 milliwatts.

I still have to find a 1-2 mm allen screwdriver and a torx bit to get the iPAQ apart and see how I could get a different LED in the case.

Alternatively there is something called 'Total Remote' by Griffin Technology. It plugs into the earphone/audio out jack and retails for $24.95. It isn't 100% compatible with devices and they make no guararntee.

I'd rather go with a higher power IR LED. Any insight?

Thanks!
