Outdoor Channel Uses Scientific-Atlanta Technology and the Extensive Reach of PanAmSat's Satellite Connectivity to Launch High-Definition Channel

TEMECULA, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In preparation for the July 2005 launch of the all-new Outdoor Channel 2 HD, The Outdoor Channel (TOC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: OUTD - News), announced today that it has successfully begun broadcasting the new network's High-Definition test signal; a sneak preview of Outdoor Channel 2 HD's original HD programs, including; "Discovering America's National Parks," "Cowboys," and "World Class Sportfishing."
Using technology provided by satellite industry leader Scientific-Atlanta, and capacity on PanAmSat's Galaxy 10R satellite, The Outdoor Channel began broadcasting the HD test signal on December 29th, 2004.

How it works: From TOC's studios, original native 1080i High-Definition format video is encoded using a Scientific-Atlanta® high-definition encoder (D9050) for transmission over 270 megabit fiber optic cable to the Outdoor Channel uplink. From there, the signal is transmitted to the PanAmSat Galaxy 10R satellite on transponder 24, where it will be available to TOC's new HD customers. Scientific-Atlanta's equipment can also be used to receive TOC's HD signal from the satellite. The high-definition launch is the latest step in TOC's all digital format for content distribution. Both the east and west coast standard definition feeds of TOC's programming are delivered using a Scientific-Atlanta PowerVu® digital content distribution system, eliminating less efficient analog transmissions.

"We are extremely pleased with the results of the test signal broadcast," said TOC's VP of Operations, Gene Brookhart. "Scientific-Atlanta and PanAmSat have both been vital in this phase of our development, and we look forward to the continued excellence of their support as we approach the launch of the new HD channel."
