Pai: Streaming Video Is Effective Competition to MVPDs

"When the FCC determines a cable system is subject to effective competition, that system is no longer subject to basic rate regulation by local franchise authorities."
Is the feral gubmint really trying to involve themselves in franchise agreements?

The franchise agreement has to work for both sides and affordable service has to be one of the discussion points.

I think the idea is (for better or worse) to get rid of the requirement for franchise agreements in the cases where there is no competition (most cable companies are currently considered monopolies in a given market).

The epic fail is that in assuming that streaming companies can deliver what cable companies can. Streaming companies can't offer broadband or phone service (the no-longer-luxuries).

The reason there is no competition is because there are franchise agreements. Franchising makes more sense than having six sets of cable connected to the utility poles or crossing the utility easements. It allows one carrier to have the whole area with the understanding that the jurisdiction is going to have to sign off on what they charge.

Epic fail describes the current FCC perfectly.
