Hopefully the phone company has a record of who the sales person was, and more importantly they have a recording of the phone call.
Since the whole deal was done through the phone company (Does Verizon bundle Dish?), he should cancel through the phone company, not Dish.
And, hopefully, they used a credit card, so if they try and charge something to cancel, they can dispute the charges and most likely win based on the salesperson's deception/incompetence. Credit card companies generally side with the consumer in these matters.
Depending on where in NY the parents live, they might wanna check out the cable offerings for TV and Internet. They often have decent bundle pricing, including "triple play" packages with phone. (They can keep their current number.) But, personally, I think they'll save more money and get more features using a VoIP service like Ooma or Vonage over whichever high speed internet they end up with.
Dish doesn't want unhappy customers. ERT or Executive Resolution Team can do more than our favorite DIRT members.

This has nothing to do with being technically savvy. It has everything to do with being functional consumers and to insist that the elderly can't be responsible because they're old is not reasonable. And yes they should have done more due diligence in going over the guide but I guess they took the gentleman for his word, they are older and not at all tech savy.
That is probably true. The "executive" team's function (and contact info) was abused by many people. Way too often, over the slightest issue -- that the customer made no effort to resolve with the 1st-level support -- people HERE said "contact the executive team! Here's the email address!". It became obvious that the ERT group chose which issues to handle and which ones to ignore (and good for them !).Disagree, had an issue and talked to the ERT team twice over the course of 10 days and an email, nothing was getting done. Sent a PM to a DIRT member and the matter was resolved within a couple of hours...
What were the costs to Dish to carry NY sports and what were the terms dictated by the NY sports providers upon Dish? That should be the question you should be asking. If the costs are terms were in line with all other RSN's across the US then yes I will agree, Dish acted stupidly. But if they asked unreasonably high rates for retransmission and had unrealistic terms in order to carry the retransmission, do you honestly want Dish to just roll overs to whatever NY sports demands? On another point why is dish making the stupid decision of not carrying the Knicks, Rangers, Yankees and now I just read the Lakers, this seems idiotic, Parents wouldn't have cancelled if it was available as an add on package.
I'm assuming Yes Network and MSG wanted more than say fox ohio, but you are losing a much bigger fan base by not providing the knicks and yankees compared to say the Indians, so I don't believe that is a valid point, If this was the case I want to be able to opt out of paying for all the crappy channels I never watch that we are still paying for.
Dish does, believe it or not, carry a number of regional sports networks. If one were to speculate why YES and MSG aren't carried, and knowing Dish, I'd say that those (2) networks wanted "too much" money. How much is too much ? That's for Dish to decide....
