Whatever it is you are talking about, won't change the FACT that the 612 does NOT do PIP. If it's important to you, you chose the wrong receiver. Should have gotten a 622/722/722K.
The seperator allows Single wire use.
It allows you to use 1 wire to run both your receivers tuners.
This is so you can record live tv , while watching,or recording another channel at the same time.
Again the VIP 612 Does NOT do Picture In Picture.
Only the VIP DVRs 622,722,722k and thats only in Single Mode.
Vip 222 also does PIP But it is not a DVR.

I wish Dish would add a mode button on to their remotes. some many customers call me because they forgot how to set the pip on the receiver and how to turn it back into dual mode. I also still think a clock on the face of the receiver would be nice.
I wanted a clock as well, so I put a small alarm clock right on top of it.

No clock was one of the dumbest decisions Dish made. It's the first box I have ever had that didn't have a clock. 
What's it need a clock for? Blu-Ray players don't have them why should a sat receiver. Besides it displays the time on screen when you press view tv or info.
