Polish president, 95 others die in Russia jet crash

MOSCOW

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia on Saturday, killing 96, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the Soviet-era Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.


Pretty terrible thing to happen to a country during a time of remembrance of a 70 year old massacre.

I havent heard much about relations other than that they have been slowly but steadily improving over the years but since the early 80's things have really been quite out of that country since Lek Valenza's time. If there was ever an incident that screams espionage novel this is it and boy would it make a great plot for a movie.

Tragic event. The ironic part is the site where the accident happened was the same site the Pols were persecuted during the 1940's by the Russians.

Change that word from persecuted to massacred and you'll be spot on....

We recently watched an excellent movie called Katyn about this horrible event, available at Netflix.

Yes, Katyn was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language category.
