My soon to be 2 year old daughter has started showing many signs of being ready to start potty training. She tells me just before she dirties her diaper, and lately she has started asking to sit on the potty. I am working on gathering information and getting a plan in mind for her training. I am a first time mom so I am new to this and need help! Do any of you moms or dads have tips/suggestions from your potty training experiences?

My only advice is patience. Don't force anything on her; she'll do everything when she is good and ready :) Oh yeah, plenty of praise when she does well and lots of understanding when she doesn't. Good Luck!

My step daughter almost had a VERY short life. When my wife tried to encourage her to, shall we say, "complete the paperwork" herself, the little girl replied to the effect: "That's what I have you for."

+1. Praise when she does good (maybe a small candy treat) and positive encouragement when she has an accident. Make the successes and the failure pleasant for her.

this is appropriate then :)

THE POTTY
A LITTLE THREE YEAR OLD BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET. HIS MOTHER THINKS HE HAS BEEN IN THERE TOO LONG, SO SHE GOESIN TO SEE WHAT'S UP. THE LITTLE BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET READING A BOOK. BUT ABOUT EVERY 10 SECONDS OR SO HE PUTS THE BOOK DOWN, GRIPS ONTO TO THE TOILET SEAT WITH HIS LEFT HAND AND HITS HIMSELF ON TOP OF THE HEAD WITH HIS RIGHT HAND.
HIS MOTHER SAYS: "BILLY, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?YOU'VE BEEN IN HERE FOR A WHILE.
BILLY SAYS: "I'M FINE, MOMMY.. I JUST HAVEN'T GONE 'DOODY' YET."
MOTHER SAYS: "OK, YOU CAN STAY HERE A FEW MORE MINUTES.BUT, BILLY, WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF ON THE HEAD?"
BILLY SAYS: "WORKS FOR KETCHUP."

Patience is big with this but to help it along make it a game with a reward such as a treat or a mom and daughter walk or an activity she wants to do and always and I do mean always provide positive encouragement even when they don't make it to the bathroom in time. The pull ups that you can find for the process are worth the money but don't waste money on the name brand stuff, get the generic store brand and you'll be fine.

Now the next step you can take once she is doing good during the day is to get her into big girl panties and be sure to make a huge deal out of how monumental this is, basically you have to get it into her head that this is the most stupendous event in her world and that it is important for her to not mess in them. We did this with our daughter but kept her in the pull ups for another 6 weeks at night and then told her it was time to try it at night but only after we had worked with her on telling her that it was important for her to wake herself up when she felt the same kind of feeling in her lower tummy when she has to go potty. When she went to panties full time she had maybe 3 accidents and then did well but her potty training took place during her 3rd year and overall as long as you remain positive along with your husband and very encouraging it will go well.

And here I thought you were talking about MSmith finally being potty trained. :D

Now on a serious note. She is showing good signs of progress so far. Just don't get discouraged if she has a few step backs in the process.

Oh yea, take as much time as she needs and get a potty training potty or seat and to help her feel like a big girl ask her if she wants you to step out of the bathroom while she is going.

One thing that worked for our daughter, who was potty trained at 2 also, was using a kitchen timer. We went cold turkey and went right to underwear, instead of pull-ups. We'd set the timer for 30-60 minutes, and let her play. When the timer went off we would get the potty and have her sit. Usually she'd sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing would come out. But, when she went we definitely made a big deal about it. Slowly we'd extend the timer length, and then we were able to get rid of it completely.

I would say within 3-6 weeks she was completely trained, with very few accidents. It sounds like your little one is completely ready, and I think you will be pleased with how quickly she'll be trained.

Our youngest was a similar experience - put her right in undies so she knew it was a problem when she had an accident (they just don't get it in pull-ups, although we used those at night), and used a timer.

I think everyone's pretty much hit it on the head - be positive, don't try to force it. I've been through it four times, and all I can say is they are just ready when they're ready. When they are, it's easy. If they're not and you try to force it, it's not good, and in some cases can even lead to problems down the road.

Lucky for you, it sounds like she's ready - just be consistent and keep your sense of humor!

My youngest boy is almost 2 1/2, and shows zero interest in the potty.
Unfortunately for us, I remember our older son being harder to train than our daughter was.

The paperwork comment made me laugh, my oldest son would hollar "I need someone to wipe me" for a long time. I would just yell back to do it himself.
