Right now I have a Terk 5x8 switch hooked up and I currently have it plugged into an electrical outlet using the supplied power adapter. Everything is working fine but I am just curious if this is required and what the power is used for?
Thanks

It is absolutely necessary. It powers the switching electronics. The switch will not work without the power supply.

In a world of competition and bottom line costs in manufacturing, they would eliminate it, if they could. They don't add an additional screw on the case, unless they need it.
