I have been subscribed to Charter Cable for several years.

Each month I am paying a monthly fee for Charter's "Cisco Explorer Model 4640HDC" Cable Box.

I would like to simply purchase my own cable box and eliminate the monthly fee.

Is there a Cable Box you would suggest that I purchase?

Hopefully it will be available from Amazon or a local store such as Walmart.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Charter will NOT authorized a purchased dvr such as the ones Claude has linked above. Unless they have very recently changed their policies, which I doubt. You are either stuck with what they offer, OR, you need to purchase a tuner or dvr that can handle a cable card. So for the dvr, that narrows you down to only TIVO for purchased. There are many just tuners that can handle cable cards. There is a monthly charge for the cable card.

So, even if you do this, you will STILL pay a monthly charge for it due to the need for the cable card! I own my Dish DVR, and I still get charged a monthly fee for it...

They have us by the balls, and they KNOW it.

I own a TIVO that I used before I switched to Charter and the MCard costs $2 a month. Without it you cannot receive programming. Companies will always find a way to get your cash!

Does the box charter give you have a cable card slot with a cable card behind a screw plate?

If so you could buy your own hd/DVR and swap cards between the boxes.

Should work fine as long as you have an M card
