Question about aspect ratios on an LCD HDTV

I just bought a 32" Westinghouse for the bedroom, 32w6. Should a 480i/p signal be filling the entire screen? 720p and 1080i signal shows as expected. Tv aspect is set to standard. If I try my dvd player or Xbos 360 in 480p, the picture looks like it's 4x3. If I set the tv to Fill, the entire screen is filled. Am I missing something with an LCD display? I expected a dvd source to fill the entire screen like it does on my 57" RPTV. I expect to see the black bars depending on how the movie was filmed. thanks.
