On my point dish menu it say my elevation for my
zip code is 38 degrees. I seem to remember that
the birds actual location in the sky is higher.

At 45 degrees N, what is the actual elevation of the
bird?

helpful to know what dish you have and what birds youre looking for.

I think you misunderstand the elevation/look angle vs where the dish appears to point issue

If your point dish screen says the satellite is at 38°, then that is the ACTUAL elevation of the satellite from your location. That is the actual setting you need to have on your Dish's elevation scale on the side of the assembly.

When you put your Dish Network Dish at 38°, and you look at the where the Dish appears to point, the Dish will APPEAR to point only about 16° above horizontal.

The Dish is actually pointing 38° above horizontal, but appears to point only about 16° above horizontal.

If you make believe that the Dish is a mirror and you are trying to look at the reflection of the LNB in the middle of the dish, you will see why this is the case. The LNB is off-set by about 22°. The scale on the side of the dish already compensates for this.

Thanks Tony for the good explanation.

The reason for the question was for a house that has a tree that seems to be
in the way of the dish. If a mirror sits on the dish is that aiming at the
bird or is it actually higher in the sky.

At another location my 110 satellite has Az 148, El 36, Skew 81 and only
a 60 Signal Strength. I do notice that I'm getting the froze or scrambled
HD picture.....could that because I don't have a strong enough signal or
is it just a symptom of HD (seems to happen more with locals than the
nationals).
