I am just about ready to pay my $40 and attach an external hard drive to my 622. I went to Dish's web site and to various threads here at SatelliteGuys to gather information. Everything looks straightforward except for two things:

  1. What brand of 750 GB disk to buy. Almost every brand seems to have some people who love it and some who have had problems. Right now I am leaning towards Western Digital unless someone has some new information which would scare me away from it.
  2. Here is a quote from the Dish web site:

  • I already paid the one-time $39.99 Archiving Activation fee to connect an external hard drive to my ViP-series DVR receiver – do I have to pay the DVR EHD one-time fee also?

Yes. These are two different services.
What does that mean? Are there two $40 fees to pay?

I have a seagate, a western digital mybook, and a maxtor. My favorite is the mybook. -none of the seagate sleep issues, and the mybook wakes up the fastest.
