What has become of our society? Now there are situations where smoking could be the only reason a movie is rated R? If the smoking is pervasive in today's world, the movie is rated R. If the smoking is pervasive, but the movie is based on a historical setting (ie...Murrow), then it is OK. I smoke. I know it's bad. I'm considerate..not in the house, not with the kids, not in the car. I'm thinking maybe I'm wrong for believing this goes too far because I'm a smoker.

There was Christian Evangelical movie that was given a PG because it had too much "jesus" in it.

I am a militant smoker. In a smoking area, if somome asks me nicely to let my cigar go out, that its bothering them, I'll gladly grant their request and apologize. If they start huffing and snorting and waving their hands complaining about the smoke, I puff harder. ;)

If I am in a smoking area, I smoke. period. If I am not, I don't. Period.

I agree with that if I'm in a smoking area, and people complain then, why are they in the smoking area.

I heard this on NPR driving home. Both of my parents smoked when I was growing up and I've never been tempted to start. Still, I don't know if smoking=sex=violence=cursing, but it seems the MPAA thinks so.

There was an Arthur C. Clarke story that had a person whose job it was to erase all evidence of smoking from classic movies. Once again, more evidence that Clarke is a visionary.

Seeing smoking anywhere is disquisting.

I quit watching boston legal completely because they are glamorizing smoking.

I will NOT eat at any restaurant that allows smoking even if they provide a non smoking area, because smoke stinks and tends to spread.

I advocate a special health tax on smoking a extra buck a year,. year one a dollar extra. year ten $10 extra on top of regular cost.....

smoking around any child should be considered child abuse and teted as such, even private homes. the health risks are just to great

Outside of a historical setting, why should any movie have anyone smoking? My understanding is that there are specific guidelines for the type of smoking that would be given an R rating. We have enough little girls running around looking like sluts because they want to look like Paris Hilton or Brittany Spears, we don't need them smoking as well, just because their "role model" does. For the amount of death it has caused, smoking is very violent. I will be happy when the US is declared a smoke free zone. Not quite ready to have smokers shot on sight, but sending them all to Guantanamo as enemies of the state might be OK.

Bogy... your thought process sometimes escapes me. You can show me 50 people getting killed in an explosion PG. One person lights up a cigarette... R. Ummm,... okay.. so my kid won't pick up smoking, but he will blow up 50 people because he saw it in a movie!

BTW...no fast food should be shown in the movies because of the VIOLENT way people die from poor diets too!

Silly... just silly. Maddening, but silly.

Kids do what they see adults do, if a sports hero starts wearing pink and yellow striped polo's then you will see the kids that idolize him doing the same ( air jordans ring a bell? ) But that aside alot of kids like to portray things that are bad, I see it in the online games I play by way of listening to what they are saying. When I used to be a guild leader on a small yet persistant game I had 40 members in the guild wich roughly half were under legal age to do much of anything. Most of the time conversations centered around getting high at home or somewhere after school, other conversations were about who they had gotten into a fight with that day or over the weekend. After awhile I found out that the largest part of these kids all lived within the same city in Florida.

By no means am I saying that all kids will be influenced by what they see on a movie or tv show or magazine add but it couldnt hurt to further minimize what is definitely a dirty habit and a dangerous one from being shown to them but alas I dont see it being but marginaly effective as this will rely on parents doing the right thing wich is to not let the kids see the movie but also the broadcast stations adhere to the rules governing the showing of an R rated film on ota and pay to view tv. Last night I was watching the remake of the legend of sleepy hollow ( johny dep, christina ricci [ oh so hot ], and christopher walkin ) on TNT and was surprised to see that they showed the some of the beheading scenes.

You have a source to show that one person lighting up a in a movie will give in an R rating. Here's what the linked article actually says:
Although the MPAA said that scenes of smoking would not warrant an automatic R, Glickman said the organization will consider three questions in considering giving a movie a tougher rating: whether the smoking is pervasive; if the movie glamorizes smoking; and if there is an historic or other mitigating context for the smoking.
Tony, do you smoke? It may be affecting your ability to think, or read, or possibly to comprehend what you read, or possibly your ability to check facts before giving a knee jerk response.

I haven't smoked for 22 years. I would like to know why it's ok to smoke dope but not ok to smoke tobacco.

The response is rooted in complete exsasperation! How raising a rating of a movie based solely on smoking (glamorised...like the lead character, an adult, smokes and enjoys it), a legal act, but a movie where there is a depiction romantisising war waged by children as young as 12 as the only means to resolve a conflict, with death and (bloodless) dismemberment garners a PG rating (not PG13 which is what this rating was designed for after Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) is just NUTS!

Anyway, as to my personal smoking habits, I have explained those in a previous post. I am a year into my third "quit". They last for years, but I actually LIKE smoking so nothing is certain as long as it remains legal.

tony the idea is that smoking by stars encourages kids to smoke

stars shouldnt be seen smoking on tv and movies because it encourages kids

R rating cuts into audience so movie producers will avoid smoking scenes to mae more bucks.

tobacco payed big bucks for years to get smoking scenes in tv and movies because it helped sales.

must be hard to market a product that kills its consumers, they have to make up deaths by hooking more kids.....

Tony what child killing war movie are you talking about that only got a pg13 rating? If there was a single standard rating system for movies, television, music, and games then there could be a better way to do the rating for a movie that has actors in it smoking cigarettes or dope.

Some of the rating systems now are basic and a few companies have some advanced rating info so as "Simulated blood and gore" so how hard would it be to add "Simulated drug use" and "Adult/young adult/children smoking" instead of rating the movie "R"? Guess it costs to much to print the extra ink.

you, know, i hate listeing to stupid F****** people talk "oh smokings bad for you, you shouldnt do it, im totally against it". oh yeah, well then maybe I shouldnt have sex either cause ill get aids, or use a cell phone cause it causes brain cancer.
Get off yer stinking holier than though thou bull attitude. I cant wait to have some big tub of lard fat person tell me smoking is bad for me, when they sit and eat 3 bags of doritos and 20 twinkies a day, along with a 12 pack of coke.
Everything in moderation my boys.

First of all please reread my post, it got a PG rating, not PG13 as it should have.

The movie is "The Legend of Narnia". I personally witnessed 9 children between the ages of 6 and 10 being escorted (or carried) out in the middle of the movie. Most of them in tears. One of them was an emotional disaster as he cried and screamed uncotrolably in greif! This movie was rated PG because of the story it told, not because it didn't deserve a PG13 rating.

But please keep to my point which is the utter stupidity of this double standard of what is good for children.
