RCA DVR80 Noise

Just installed an RCA DVR80 last night. Noticed some loud (fan) noise from the next room when TV was off. I adjusted the position of the box and the noise quieted. This morning my wife called me and said the box was making noise. I asked if it was loud noise you could hear from a room away with two other people talking (like last night) or if it was noise she could hear sitting in a dead silent room with the DVR while reading (as was the case this morning when she called me).

Question is: How much noise from the DVR is normal during:

On and operating

On and just watching live tv
