Why would old movies have to be upconverted? If the old movies are stored
on film, there is more resolution there than on the 480i broadcast versions.
Or am I missing something?

[VOOM] Upconvering movies to 1080i?

Hi Sean, That's what I thought as well. And on VOOM's movie channels
it is stated upfront that the movies are mastered in 1080i. I'll
guarantee that the analog masters of the film-mostly likely 35mm-has
much, much higher resolution than any currently digital TV
transmission. Of course, the quality of the film itself can vary greatly.

[VOOM] Aspect issues

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find that thread. I
just had Voom installed three days ago. The installer did a fine job
with the dish/antenna and hookup, but was clueless and downright rude
about the box and remote setup. My problem is that with non-HD
channels I cannot get the aspect right. I just want the picture to
fill my 4:3 TV without distortion or shrinking (black bands all
around) I have tried all the settings in the System Setup/Picture
Format menu without success. Any ideas? (HD works great, letterboxed)

[VOOM] Re: native vs. upconverted

You sound like someone that has seem how ugly up-converted SD can be
if done improperly. Voom's exclusive channels and nearly all other HD
channels are free of up-converted SD. Only TNT-HD is showing a
stretched, up-converted SD, but decent picture.

RE: [VOOM] Aspect issues

The part that stinks there is that the box outputs 480i for SD channels. I=
f
your TV doesn't have a built in up convert function it looks pretty bad.

Agreed, I have an older Samsung CRT HDTV, about 2 years old and some of the SD channels (esp. Fox Sports World) look rather bad in 480i. This needs upconverted asap. Take note, VOOM! Please work on an upconvert, if this is feasible.

Respectfully yours,

RE: [VOOM] Aspect issues

I would bet the next generation equipment (DVR) will improve on this. With
my Time Warner DVR I can selectively upconvert. I convert 720p to 1080i,
and 480i to 480p. I can also switch to 480p from 1080i with a single button
on the remote for programs that are not widescreen on an otherwise HD
channel since my TV is 4:3.
