[VOOM] rain fade?

Hopkins fight finally starts, satelite signal goes out!! What can
be done to reduce chances of SPRINKLES (really!) knocking out
signal. Thank god I live in Arizona, where it doesn't rain much.
Any ideas?

I'm with you on that...the rain fade is terrible, and I have an average
signal between 87-90. I have noticed even a slightly more than sprinkle of
rain and it starts cutting out. And yes, I am also in Arizona.

[VOOM] Re: rain fade?

Hi, John,

Your sat signal should not be 87-90! Something is wrong. Assuming
you don't have any trees in the way you should get a minimun of 96 in
all that clear weather you get down there. Now, I know you get a few
thunderstorms which should put you out of business temporarily. We
got a 96 way up here in Seattle where we are definitely on the edge.
Now we get 98-99 in clear weather with our upgraded 24". Had one
period of dropouts for less than 30' a couple of months ago during a
day of record rainfall.

Maybe a misaligned sat antenna? Poor wiring? A bad diplexer if you
are using one?

Still enjoying HDTV under way too clear and rainless Seattle skies, Gill

Thanks, I am going to recheck the signal today and take whatever action
is needed to fix it. Rain fade can be real annoying. Especially this year,
we in Arizona have been getting more than our average rain this year.

Re: [VOOM] Re: rain fade?

Hmmmmn.....I will check again to make sure the signal is what I said it
was.
I don't have any trees in the way, the house next to me was kinda a
problem, at least the angle the sat had to be pointed. Maybe the larger
dish will help that.

[VOOM] Re: rain fade?

I am new to Voom with my installation set for the 8th of March.
Directv folks (who are trying to retain my membership with them are
saying all sorts of things about Voom)(folks in the retention
department). 1) that Voom has a weak signal due to 61.5 location of
satellite (they say too low). 2) they attack the HD programming as
just a bunch of old movies 3) that they have friends who say that
the Voom DVR has performed terribly in Beta tests.......yada yada
yada. I have still decided to join Voom despite hearing this. One of
the main reasons is the fact that all Directv receivers will soon be
obselete (at least the HD ones)when they switch to M-PEG4
broadcasts.
I must admit though, I am getting worried about this rain fade
issue. With Directv rain storms don't affect my signal unless it is
during the most severe 5-15 minutes of a severe thunderstorm. This
maybe 3-5 times per summer (almost never during fall or winter) and
never for more than 15 minutes. My question is, are there any Voom
customers in the Northeastern or mid-Atlantic US who have had to
switch to switch to this 24 inch Satellite due to rain fade or who
are suffering from severe outages of signal due to rain fade? I mean
when someone in this thread said that even drizzle causes outages I
am getting nervous. I am in Baltimore, MD. Should I go ahead with
the March 8th install? I really want to. Thanks!!!!
Wayne

RE: [VOOM] Re: rain fade?

Look angle in Baltimore is actually higher than DirecTV's, if you want the
truth. The higher the look angle the less atmosphere the dish looks through
to the satellite that translates into less rain the dish has to look
through.
If the installer does his job well, true for Direct, Dish or Voom, then
you'll get more signal, typically from Voom than the other two currently and
should really have very little trouble with rain.
The DVR, as far as I know, also by the way, isn't in beta yet, so I don't
know how badly it could have performed.
Just so you know,
Wilt

Re: [VOOM] Re: rain fade?

I got an upgrade to 24" and no more rain fade. It wasn't really a big issue
at first except for one week last fall when it continually poured. I really
think the first dish was not peaked though . Now with the 24" my signal is
consistently 97 or 98 and before it was 91 or 92. I would go ahead with the
install and see what your signal strength is after you are set up. If you
experience rain fade contact VOOM and persist until you get the upgrade if
you need it.

[VOOM] Re: rain fade?

Thanks for the comforting information Be-Rockin! If an 18" dish
works fine for you then it should be fine for me a less than 200
miles south of you! Thanks Again!

Definately do it! Especially with the deal they are offering now. Even SD channels look
better on VOOM than they do on Dish (I've got both. Dish for the DVR. VOOM for the HD.)

Enjoy the ride as long as it last. Live is uncertain. Eat desert first!
