[VOOM] Poor quality picture on none hd channels

Hi I'm new to the group and VOOM. I've had VOOM for two weeks. The
picture on my hd channels seems clear but on none hd channels like
oxygen there is like a haze and everything has an outline around
it .I had the repaire guy here and he told me thats the way VOOM is
and there was nothing he could do about it. He also said that VOOM
dos'nt broadcast in true HD.Can someone tell me if you do or do not
have this problem or is the repair guy full of it ? Thanks in
advance .

Uh what's the techguy talking about? Did he have a DirectTV shirt on or something? What's with with the Voom's not in true HD? My RPTV flashes 1080i at me when I tune to Voom, sure looks like HD to me! Needs more bandwidth but so do all the HD providers except for OTA. Also Voom's SD quality is just as good as DirectTV's I don't think can make it any better. What haze are you getting?

Sounds like you have a TV issue. My VOOM picture kills all the DTV HD I've
seen. I know multiple DTV installers that have VOOM at home, and they get
their basic DTV package darn near free.

I don't have any experience with DirectTV; however, I had Dish and
Voom's SD is significantly sharper. The line you see at the edge of
objects is most likely due to your TV's sharpness setting. Try
lowering it and the line should disappear.

Signal quality does vary between channels. If all your channels are
equally bad, it might be your receiver. Have you consider asking
Voom to let you try another receiver?

It is compressed. But I think all HD is compressed now by all providers. Even HDnet on Dish now does not look like it used too. Although, Vooms compression of an average 12 Mbps (probably using multiplexers) and low power may be the worst PQ of E* D* and V*.

All HD is NOT compressed. The original source transmission on C-Band
is not compressed. Unless you have a C-band system you cannot possibly
make a complete comparison regarding Voom, Directv, or Dish. PQ from
worst to best is as follows: Dish, Directv, Voom, C-Band. I have all
four. Voom blows Directv away but C-band buries them all. If it was
not for C/Ku band there would be not Directv, Voom or Dish.

I think you're tech guy is full of it. The nice thing about my situation is that I can check PQ on D* on a Phillips 50+" RPTV then I can go home and check V* on a 60" RPTV same exact model just a little bigger... now...

The PQ is almost the same to me, except for HDNet which consistently has better PQ. You're ESPNHD, DIscoveryHD, etc.. pretty much the same. Voom's SD is about the same at times a little SHARPER than D*. Voom needs to get ALL their bandwidth up to HDNet on D* standards IMO, but you can't say "OMG VOOM'S PICTURE LOOKS LIKE SD!!" I think you may need to seriously calibrate your TV AND switch your connection try DVI, or component if you are already using DVI and see how it works out.

[VOOM] Re: Poor quality picture on none hd channels

I too have had Voom for a couple of weeks, viewing through DVI on 50-
inch set. Also tried component, but DVI looks better. I also still
have Dish SD channels. Can't compare the HD channels but can switch
back and forth between Dish SD and Voom SD. Quality seems to vary a
great deal on Voom SD channels, some pretty good and others pretty
awful. None, however, are as good as Dish SD, in my opinion. The Voom
SD channels tend to be soft and perhaps over-compressed. Might look
OK on smaller screen TV, but not large one. Perhaps it has something
to do with location, since I am in the West and I understand signal
if more difficult to receive there. Must say at this point I am not
all that happy with Voom, especially since I cannot get my locals in
HD.

Wow,

This is completely opposite of my experience with Dish and Voom. I was comparing using a Dish 811 and Voom and Voom's SD picture quality was far better. This was the case on both a 32" Philips CRT and a Sanyo Z2 projector. Perhaps the receiver model has something to do with it???? I also think that after a few hours of watching HD, it gets pretty easy to find fault with SD picture quality....

>>>after a few hours of watching HD, it gets pretty easy to find fault with

That is so true! However, as most on this forum know, I am a huge Voom fan
and love my voom. I've had voom for 3 months now (to the day 6/3/04) and I
only have 3 gripes.

1) I wish they'd get the SCI-FI channel as Friday nights are the worst not
being able to watch StarGate SG1/Atlantis
2) Release the DVR!! - I wouldn't need to be home to watch StarGate :)
3) I with they would fix the dang sound (hi/low) on channel 412. If I go to
412 from any HD station, I have turn up the volume about 30db. If I go to
any HD station from 412, I just about blow the fuse on my stereo receiver. I
also found last night that 409 had a much cleaner, better looking picture
than 412. However watching the RNC on 999 was awesome!!

Other than that, still loving voom in texas..

Robert
