Replace Hard Drive in Dish DVR 625 - howto Install Software

I own (not rent) the Dish 625 DVR. My old hard drive was making clicking noises. The live TV/receiver piece worked, but the DVR/recording functions didn't work, and I would always get error message 'issue has been detected that may affect ability to record or pause live tv'.

1. Opened up the box, and replaced old drive with new identical unit/model (Western Digital WD2500JB).

2. Connected phone line. Powered on (both ways - press and hold front panel power switch & physically removing power cable and putting it back on'

3. Still get the error 'issue has been detected that may affect ability to record or pause live tv - reference 04ee'.

Somewhere I read, that if a new hard drive is replaced, and phone line is conncted, it would automatically format the drive and install appropriate Dish software. But that is not happening in my case. Since I own the DVR, I doubt Dish people would help me.

What can I do so that my DVR starts working again?

Compatible hard drives for the 625. (From the dishmod group on yahoo)
The last six digits are very important. You must use one of these exact drives in order for the 625 to recognize it.
There are other drives but I listed only the WD ones.

Many thanks to the dishmod group on Yahoo.

Am I reading this correctly. In order for Dish 625 to load software automatically, it needs the right 'sub model' of the hard drive. The new one I am using is WD2500JB-00READ. That's weird that even the 'sub model' # makes a difference.

Anyway, looks like you can't buy any of the sub model #s mentioned. The maxtor drive link by KAB says that the model is different from the acceptable models listed.

Considering you cant buy any compatible drives - does that mean I just throw away the DVR? Any suggestions??

It's too late now that you broke the seal on the drive. You could have just called Dish and added the DHPP to your account and dish would have replaced the 625 at no charge.

Huh??? I see nothing to that effect.

can you still use a drive from a different leased box?

leased units are around, at one time you could scrap it out for parts.........
