Rupe rushes ESPN (Variety)

Variety - News Corp. is planning a sports cable network to take on ESPN but the decision to greenlight the net will hinge on negotiations currently under way with the NFL.

I was always wondering how long it would be before Newscorp did this. They already have "SpeedTV" so they have the motorsports angle wrapped up. They then also have all of their FSN regional sports networks to draw from. Finally bring in the Sports experience from the FOX network (NFL, MLB, and Nascar) and they won't be coming out of the box as a rookie.

This is good, since ESPN gets cited for high channel prices all the time since they are the "one of a kind, must have" channel.
