Samsung Electronics is hosting the 3GPP RAN (3rd Generation Partnership Project – Radio Access Network) group to begin the standardisation of 5G technologies. The group, which meets in Busan, Korea, includes around 400 technology experts from 80 telecoms businesses. The meeting follows on from a 5G workshop held in Phoenix, Arizona last September.

“During this meeting, 3GPP members will discuss ways to support the effective integration of new services such as IoT (Internet of Things) into 5G, and measures to ensure the compatibility of 5G technologies,” reads Samsung's statement. Research into those areas will be conducted by 3GPP until next June and it plans to have the first standardisations of 5G ready by June 2018.

The Korean tech firm has been working on 5G since 2011. In its tests, it has managed to get a speed of1.2 Gbps in a “mobile environment from a vehicle travelling at 110 kilometers per hour” and 7.5 Gbps while stationary.

The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance, an association of mobile operators, vendors, manufacturers and research institutes, wants to see 5G rolled out by 2020 so that business and consumer demands are met.
