Does anyone know since dish went from three satellite locations down to two has picture quality suffered? Also are they now maxed out on capacity with this switch?
I know they switched from mpeg 2 to mpeg 4 and dropped sd channels to help with the switch.
Any plans to launch a new satellite or ever go back to a 129 sat location? Do they broadcast all channels in full resolution?
Wondering in terms of being able to add new channels in the future or even 4k stuff?
How does the picture quality compare to Direct Tv and streaming like You Tube Tv or Direct Tv stream?

We have a hopper 3 no issues with PQ. Some channels on dish look better than on directv like MTV classic on directv looks like utter crap looks good on dish. Our dtv had very fine pixelation though signal levels were at 99%.

Dtv customer service is utter sh*t!!! And that comes from personal experience. Dish has treated us like gold!!! Though dtv has a price lock to it don't include rate increases!!!

The genie dvrs are the Yugo of dvrs there slow no voice remotes like the hopper. Other than the few 4k channels dish has everything's in HD. If you go with dtv you'll more than likely get an hs-17 genie 2 a client only system so no HD box for camping unless you want to open a second acct

What box were you planning on getting with dish :what??? The hopper 3 is they way to go with dish period hands down!!! We have our hopper 3 connected to a 163 inch micro led set and the PQ is amazing ;):)!!! And there's no sign of HD compression either!!! With them loosing subs i don't think they will launch a third sat i am sure they moved everything over to save $$$ as well!!! I wouldn't hold out for everything to be in 4K either!!!

The audio is also as good as dtv as well since there both digital systems. What it comes down to is if your a sports nut or not... if your a sports nut dtv is the way to go if all you want is some basic cable channels then dish is the way to go!!! DISH don't offer the RSN'S also we knew that going in and it don't bother us...

I understand Dish has another satellite on order, although I don't know the expected launch date or intended location. Also, I don't have a current list, but Dish typically has more than one satellite at a given location, making capacity less of an issue. The 129 slot isn't likely to be used again for DBS TV, but Galaxy 34 may still be there.

i always thought the sat on order would be to replace a dying sat. since some of old farts still watch sat tv :biggrin :shh 🤣

Ok John,
You Love Dish, we see that ...

The OP asked a few questions about DISH and how people thought the picture quality was vs a few others ....
He didn't ask about comparing DISH and D* for recvrs, or Sat or any thing else. Didn't say he was going to D*. :(

He did ask about picture quality vs D* and a few Streaming options.

I notice now that since I switched to an LG OLED 4k TV, my picture looks great on all devices I hook up to it. My old Hopper 3 that I use for ota recording only now, looks great on ota channels. Even METV in SD looks sharp and clear. There is no artifacts in the background on dark shots and it looks bright and you can see the same quality picture no matter where you sit in the room with no color fading.

Got one for my parents first, because of their room angles problem. They were reducing their old models B-3 to around $799 early this year and we bought one for them and decided we had to have one too. There living room is so wide that a regular HD or 4k TV doesn't look good on the far angles of the room without color fading, where they have their couch on one side and chairs on the other side of the room. But the LG OLED looks uniformly excellent anywhere in the room. Bright as well.

So I think now that maybe all those years of arguing about the two satellite services and who has the better picture, could of been more about the TV we were using and not the actual satellite picture. Never go back to using regular TVs after the LG OLED. :smug

what screen size were you able to get for 779 for the older model

The picture quality is not as bad as it was on DISH in the early 2000s when everyone was getting HD televisions and Dish was pushing only SD content. I remember the ghosting and all the digital artifacts when Dish was really crunched for capacity running 119/110 under MPEG2.

The problem today with everything being broadcast in HD, and the majority of the televisions being sold today being pure garbage, people don't really know what a good picture quality should look like.

First of all I am a firm believer of OLED technology. That is the only type of television I want to put in my house. I will admit that Dish and DIRECTV look great today. If you really want to see what some of these televisions can do, try streaming some 4K content, or get a 4K DVD.

The only thing I can say is that Dish has gotten rid of all their SD content and basically crammed everything on 119/110, There is really no room to expand any programming offerings as if they had the capacity they would have kept their international programming on satellite instead of making it streaming only. I think its safe to say that any channel additions to Dish will have a negative impact on picture quality

Directv isn't really doing much better in terms of HD capacity. However they have the reverse band frequencies available and when they finally get rid of their SD programming they will have 46 free Transponders available between 119/110/101

Funny 20 years ago we had DISH saying they had all this satellite capacity available to them with 50 transponders available to them between 119/110 compared to DIRECTV only having 32 at 101. Now look who has more, a significant amount more.

Again, technology has advanced to the point its like doing basic functions on a computer. You really can't tell if your using a $100 computer or a $3000 computer.

I, too, was an OLED droid. But other technologies today produce almost as good a picture on SELECT videos. Same quality for most videos. And LAST MUCH LONGER!

And the NEXT big thing? OLET? Haven't heard much lately.

That's because i have been treated better with DISH than DIRECT. Wich is still a disaster!!! Along with the constant price hikes and no innovation and more than likely none in the future... as far as streaming services PQ there hit or miss the op will need to do some free trial runs!!!
