Simple pause live tv ?

This is probably a simple question to answer but can you only pause live tv on a DVR receiver?

Correct.

(Although a VIP 211 receiver can be made into a DVR by paying the $40 fee and attaching an external USB hard drive.)

BTW, you can do a similar thing with OTA channels by getting a $30 "ATSC USB stick" which connects to your (recent model) PC and comes with software that turns your PC into a DVR.

Note you can only pause up to the buffer size, which on HD DVRs is 1 hr. After that it will go live with a buffer filling as the oldest part is "erased". The same duration, not bytes, buffer for SD or HD.

. . . unless your TV has a "FREEZE" feature. The effect is like a DVR pause. It is designed so that you can freeze the frame to copy recipes or phone numbers, etc.

But when you "unfreeze", it jumps back to live action, doesn't it? I wouldn't compare it to a DVR pause, because on the DVR, you can pause, go to the bathroom or something, come back and continue where you left off. A "freeze" feature doesn't give you that.
