Dish Network has the Sirius Music Channels as a promotional deal.

Dish gets all these great music channels to offer customers.

Sirius gets new people interested in the idea of subscribing to Sirius Satellite Radio for their car, portable player, etc.

So, they have to hold something back from Dish subscribers in order to get them to subscribe to the full service. The Howard Stern channel cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, so that was a no-brainer - they cannot give that one away free. So, they just made all the talk and sports channels only available if you buy the full service.

I think they should offer Howard 100 & 101 on Dish, but only in conjunction with a Howard On Demand package. This would give Dish a unique selling proposition as compared to cable, and yet since it would be in a relatively expensive package that only real Howard Fans would buy, this should not compete with Sirius.

yeah now that they have the "dish online" thing with an ethernet connection they could easily do howard on demand...even if they just did the top shows on htv of the previous week it would be worth it to a lot of people

There are probably also licensing/contract issues. Most of the talk channels are not available via mediums other than the satellite reception itself. Until recently, talk channels weren't available on Sirius online streaming either.

The issue seems to be that Sirius has contracts with the talk talent, including Howard. If Sirius is going to be distributing to a new medium, of course the talents are going to want a piece of that extra revenue, which requires contract re-negotiation etc.
