I recently purchased a used DP301 receiver on Ebay. The unit is in good shape and powers up fine. When I tried to activate it, Dish reported a balance on the unit's smartcard and that they wouldn't activate the card until it was paid.

I contacted the seller and he claims no knowledge of the unit's condition other than it looked new and that he was "selling it for a buddy".

Am I hosed? I bought the unit as an additional receiver to play with HTPC designs. Is there a way to get a replacement smartcard for the unit?

From my experience with buying receivers. Always ask for the smart card and unit ID number from the seller and call Echostar before buying it.

If you want to pay the balance on the account, then you can get it activated. Otherwise its a new paperweight.

YOu can dispute the sale with ebay/paypal but its going to be tough because the seller is claiming ignorance.

Sorry.

Dish attaches the outstanding balance to both the smart card and the R00# so replacing the smart card will not clear the outstanding balance.

Paid the balance. Turns out the smartcard was hosed. Fortunately I pay for the extended warranty, so they're sending me one for free.
