How many hams do we have reading this forum and have operated via satellite?
I keep hoping I hear the International Space station on voice sometime so I can work them.

I worked MIR myself on packet but never voice. Thats was a nice catch. Recently I've been getting reinterested in satellite and have been listening to the ISS passes hoping to catch on voice but so far no luck. Any hints to catch the ISS on voice?

Hi N1wbd
I'm sure now there are newer antenna designs than I used back in early 90's
but I used a crossed dipole monted on top of my trailer.
and it worked real well, I was using only 35 watts back then
you have my interest peaked and I will do some research on antennas for Iss

Hey I wonder if my p*star dish could be mounted almost vertical with a cross Dipole feed?
sounds like another great 40" 1 meter project..

opps I realized I did not answer your question..
have you seen any type of scedule as to possible voice passes?
Mir made it easy back then they announced on packet when next voice pass would be.

You don't need a fancy antenna to work ISS I only have a a 5 element quad for 2 meters and also a Diamond X510 dual band vertical. My rig is only a ICOM V8000 and a Mirage 160watt 2 meter amp (AMP NOT REQUIRED TO WORK ISS) in fact it's frowned upon you can work ISS with as little as 5 or 10 watts.

I'm told there is not set schedule to hear the astronauts on voice they only get on when they have spare time.

Can anyone explain how one night I was flicking thru o/v channels on my 4dtv and I heard staticy morse code on a "unused" transponder?

I never wrote down the satellite or TP, sorry.

(Edit: sorry, I thought this was posted in the c-band forum. Nevertheless, I am curious about the morse I heard that night)

Hi Jerry well in all likelihood you were hearing the satellite ID beacon most all satellites do this.
