stupid question

I was trying to update the software on my old 5000 (not active but works good for aiming dishes) :D and the software on it is 2 updates behind (819 is current, I have 816)

Right now I have a cable that is just hooked to 110 so I plugged that cable into the box and did all the normal stuff (check switch, verify signal, upgrade without my permission) and I do have channel 9900 active.

Turned unit off and waited 1/2 hour...no update
turned it back off and waited another 15 mintes..nothing

I know it will take updates (which it has done before) but is the software updates only on 119, 61.5 or 148 (obviously the wings would for Int'l only)?

Or is it because the unit still has an old blue card? (I didnt think that would make a difference)

Right now both of my ports on the 119 LNB are tied into my FTA system for NASA and the audio so I can't hook the box to that (119 is through a Diseqc switch) but 110 I didnt have anything hooked to. These are Legacy dual LNB's

My guess is because that's an older receiver, they're not constantly sending out (spooling) the software, from what I read you didn't have it plugged in for a long time, i'll be if it remains plugged in and aimed at 110 eventually you'll get the proper software. I wonder how often E* sends out their software on older units like that.

Since the software is on 119, there is no reason to put it on 110 as no 5000 customers were setup for 110 only.

I don't think it is a stupid question at all. Many people are likely interested in a little more information about how the sofware updates work.

Normally, software updates are spooled from all the slots (105 and 121 may be the exceptions). Sometimes they are on the main slots (119 and 110) first but usuallythey are available at all slots when they go "full production" (available to all receivers of a given model). Some subscribers have "locals only" from 110 so it is important that DISH has software updates available from that slot.

It your case it is likely the card. Some cards will not work with the newer versions of software and the old software in the receivers is smart enough to know that and will not accept some updates.

All sats have home transponder with software updates ( exclude 118.75W for now); 119W is the main host for all beta, gamma and production SW; some sats doesn't have SW for 721/921 or other hi end receivers; if spooling all software are the same on all sats; usually (as I saw in those reports ) they cover broad range of versions - starting from factory level. I'll look for your 5000 SW, but I will need for check your receiver 4 char id .

thats what I was thought. It hasnt consistantly been hooked up for maybe a year now. It has been hooked up to aim DBS dishes and I know one time it did take the download (this was November or December) so it will take a download.

At our lake house (where this was for a while) we had just locals and a DirecTv dish at 110 and we received updates just fine, thats why I was confused

possibly.

I know someone that had an old receiver that he wanted to put in service. DISH had already sent him a new card but he could not get the software to update. I got on a three-way call with him and DISH and after about a half dozen tries we finally got to an advanced level tech that was able to fix the problem.

The problem was that my friend had a really old version of software and bacause he missed a few versions between the version he had and the latest version his receiver would not update. The DISH tech was able to put a version of software in the stream that his receiver would accept and then it was able to update to the latest version of software. We were on the phone for well over an hour. The hardest part was getting the right person as DISH.

mine is only 2 behind so it should be fine. My uncle activated a 301 that was wayyy behind and it took right away.

Hopefully it takes because I would like to get this back up and running (I like the integrated OTA built in) :)

Does this really happen? Never heard of this before?

Here it is....R & S #'s deleted for obvious reasons :)

so in simple terms, hook it up and leave it hooked up and in a couple days or so it will download the software?
