I suspect this has more to do with their cutbacks in content production than it does anything else.

none of the "content" you speak of (past or future) has ever been earmarked for those channels. they are simply redundant in the age of streaming. In 2005 it was great to have 10 different movies available to tune into via the HBO/Cinemax linear channels. Today there are 10000 different movies via a single app.
