Switch unknown

Please forgive me for being new.

I have a 301 dish receiver with a dp34 switch and a superdish
Should the switch test work even though I have not aimed it?
I mounted it and its snowing so I went inside and tried to test it.
All i got from the test was -----> x x x switch unknown

I purchased the superdish and switch from e-bay.
(my last dish 500 had a frozen branch fall on it and its destroyed)

That's all you'll get until it is aimed at a sattelite. You are 3/4 done.

The receiver has to have a signal to detect a switch. I think it best if you just use the 119 to get signal then the rest should fall into place.
