Tax on DVR fee only?

I just viewed my February dated invoice online and for the first time ever, I'm being billed $.48 for taxes (which I suspect is the $6.00 DVR fee x 8%) I'm located in central NYS near Syracuse. The DISH CSR had no clue and told me to contact NYS Taxation Dept. I've never been billed for any taxes on my DISH invoices in over 10 years. Have other NYS customers see taxes appearing on their bill for the first time this month? Thanks for your help.

I noticed taxes on my last 3 bills (increasing each month), but had never been charged tax in the prior 2 years. It took some research, but I finally received a response from consumertaxissues@dishnetwork.com with the following answer:

I apologize for the frustration. When our programming packages were updated there was an error and the billing system began charging tax on rental fees that are not taxable in Illinois. The errors have been corrected and we are working on a system wide adjustment for all the tax that was charged incorrectly. Please feel free to short-pay your invoice by the tax amount and let me know if you have any questions.

So - check the taxes charged your last few bills.

I complained the first time these showed up on my bill (Feb). After about a week and a half, I got the same response. Three bills later I am still getting the tax and no credit. The tax was not on the March bill but neither was the promised credit. In April the tax was nearly 5 times higher than the Feb tax. I just fired off another e-mail to consumertaxissues - it will be interesting to see what lie they come up with this time.

Why should I be happy to pay a tax that hasn't even been levied? The taxes we already pay are bad enough without having to pay taxes that don't even exist!!

Anyway, here is the response I received today:

I apologize in the delay we are going to be adjusting all of the taxes within the next two weeks

I guess I'll see next month when I get my May statement if they follow through. I'm sure sooner or later the corrupt Illinois politicians will figure out they can make money taxing satellite services but I resent paying the taxes any sooner than I have to!

I'm in NJ and was taxed on the DVR fee last month. I called and they credited the $.42 (6.00 x 7%). I just got this month's bill and the tax is there again. I called customer service and they tell me NJ is charging it. I notice that they call it "DVR service" instead of a fee. I argued about it, but he wouldn't listen. NJ charges tax on leased equipment and has no tax on programming.

I'm still getting taxed on the DVR service. I had to call again to get credit. The interesting part is that now that the tax was a bit higher this month. On the bill it says that a taxable charge of $9 is included with my base programming. I only have 1 receiver.

I'm in California and have a $.56 tax for the first time on the $6.00 DVR fee ($6.00 x 9.25%).

The news was talking about the Iphone and that California charges you tax based on the unsubsidized price of things.

The Iphone is $65 in taxes cause its unsubsidized cost is $400

You can smoke the weed but you pay for it :D
