The Cleveland Cavaliers part ways with head coach Mike Brown

Someone had to take the fall for the last two post-season letdowns, unfortunately, that's usually the coach and not the players.

I like what Mike Brown has done for this team. He's brought a defensive minded mentality and he's a fairly young coach in this league. I don't necessarily agree with the firing and think Mike will have no trouble at all finding a new position somewhere else in this league.

The only issue he's often questioned about is his in-game coaching decisions. At times, he seems to have trouble finding the correct rotations and making X & O changes on the fly.

Personally, I wouldn't have made a change until we had a replacement coach in mind. The NBA isn't exactly brimming with extra head-coaches. Mike Brown has a pretty solid resume and the only upgrade would be to hire a coach with Championship winning experience. I hope this isn't a step back for this team.

This most likely helps explain the timing of the move:

The ESPN story says there's a timing factor on firing Brown now, because there was a midnight deadline last night to either dump him or be obligated to pay his full $4.5 million salary for next season.

Money isn't the extent of it. Team owner, Dan Gilbert has graciously spent over and above the salary cap each year he's owned the team, has recently built a new, state-of-the-art practice facility and pumped tons of money into the team making it a first-class origination. Bottom line: Gilbert is not like the rest of the cheapskate owners of this city. He spends and if he thought Brown would give us a better chance in winning a title next year, he'd keep his job and his $4.5 million bonus.

Gilbert (and maybe Ferry) must think the team has a better chance of re-signing Lebron without Brown as head coach - - - - hope he's right!

I don't blame Brown entirely for the team's collapse, but he certainly is partly to blame. Never did like the way he handled the rotations. And I am not just talking about this year, but always. (And his constantly spitting into a cup is disgusting, though I don't think that cost the team any games.) Unfortunately, their hands are pretty much tied as far as hiring a new coach thanks to the Lebron situation. Have lost all respect for him for the way he is handling this. The team has bent over backwards to accomodate him and this is how he shows his gratitude. What more can he expect them to do for him, make him coach and GM?

Not a huge shocker in some cases coaches can only get you to a certain level and you need a new coach to get you over to the title.

The next coaching selection is going to be an interesting hire.

1. Do they hire a "YES" man, basically catering to LeBron's every wishes? (wrong decision IMO)

or do they....

2. Hire someone with the clout and credibility that won't be afraid to tell LeBron like it is?

So, Cleveland guys !

Will Brown being fired, help to keep LeBron or not ?

Who do you think will be coaching next ?

Calipari, is he a legit candidate ?

1. According to my sources, LeBron left the coaching decision up to upper management. He said he, personally wouldn't be responsible for deciding Mike Brown's fate.

2. No, I don't think Calipai is a legitimate candidate. This team needs a proven guy with the experience of a Championship to lead this team. Otherwise, we'd be taking a step backwards. We just fired a guy who has won the most games in the NBA the last two years. This is a sign by the front office that our goal extends beyond the regular season and this franchise will not accept anything less than a championship.

3. A few candidates according to the local paper. Some more far-fetched than others... (Coach K, Tom Izzo, Phil Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy, Byron Scott, John Calipari)...

Coach K....not leaving without having a percentage of the team. Izzo, nope...has it too good. Jackson.....THAT coach can make Lebron go ANYWHERE. Van Gundy......nope, not the CAVS type coach. Scott, same as Van Gundy and Calipari....he could not coach an NBA team. The players would eat him alive.

Definitely #2, but there's a huge problem there. You won't get someone with "clout and credibility" unless you have LBJ signed. Can / should the Cavs (or any other interested team) wait until sometime in July at the earliest to hire a new coach??

I think IF they want to KEEP him in Cleveland, they go after Phil Jackson. He has the option, if I am not mistaken, on his contract and the Lakers owner ship want him to take a possible significant pay cut.

Phil Jackson returning to Lakers with lower pay?

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has brought home the big trophy 10 times during the course of his coaching career that started in 1989 wit the Chicago Bulls.

The Lakers pay him pretty well right now to lead their team: He's making $12.5 million this year. But the word is that if the Lakers bring him back next season, it'll be for lower pay, according to ESPN.

His contract is up this summer so there will be plenty of teams interested in seeing if he'll move somewhere else. If they can offer what L.A. is paying him now, they might have a better chance. Jackson is saying that he and the team have talked about signing him on to coach more years but that his pay would certainly be lower than it is now.

"It's been indicated there will be a salary cut but not ... I'm not going to say 'down,' that's kind of weird to say stuff like that," Jackson said. "It's still a ridiculous salary whatever it is."

Dan Gilbert on Mike Brown...

“After a long and deep analysis of all of the factors that led to the disappointing early ends to our playoff runs over the past two seasons, we concluded that it was time for the Cavaliers to move in a different direction,” Gilbert added. “The expectations of this organization are very high and, although change always carries an element of risk, there are times when that risk must be taken in an attempt to break through to new, higher levels of accomplishment. This is one of those times.”

Reminds me of the Chargers firing Marty Schottenheimer when he couldn't get past the 1st round of the playoffs several times. At least Norv Turner gets to round two.

I heard that too, but like I said, Jackson's not signing there until he knows that LBJ is staying.
