The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today issued a Public Notice to facilitate the transition of local broadcasters to ATSC 3.0, the next-generation television standard designed to enhance viewer experiences with improved picture quality, immersive audio, and interactive features. The Media Bureau's notice outlines regulatory support and clarifies processing practices for ATSC 3.0 license applications, aiming to streamline the shift from the current ATSC 1.0 standard while ensuring minimal disruption to viewers.

Color Me Confused. The title says:

Yet in the text of the article:
The notice also emphasizes existing flexibilities in the rules to support the transition. Notably, ATSC 3.0 stations are only required to simulcast their primary stream in ATSC 1.0, not multicast streams, allowing broadcasters to allocate resources efficiently while adopting the new standard. This flexibility aims to balance innovation with viewer accessibility.

Seems to be a little of a contradiction, if I am reading this correctly.

We may all have to keep Dish Network forever if OTA goes ATSC 3.0 and DRM!

CHARLIE WINS AGAIN!

BTY, NO ONE in my DMA is even experimenting with ATSC 3.0.

If my 5 TiVos can't pick up a signal I'll not bother to buy an ATSC 3.0 tuner, regardless.

My Sony tv has a 3.0 tuner in it, but nobody is broadcasting it in Tulsa even though its been a coming soon joke for more than 5 yrs now. I won't go out of my way to spend any money for a new tuner either should 1.0 get turned off. It's mainly live sports and local weather reports that I use OTA for now. I can do without the sports and get weather forecasting from other places.

My luck (after just getting HD Homerun without the 3.0, because who is broadcasting 3.0?), all the locals in NE Ohio will switch to 3.0 tomorrow.

Same here. As I sure in aitch eeee double toothpicks won't watch anything live anyway. They will lose a lot of folks that see no value if they can't DVR programs.

Do they think they can "force" people to watch live including commercials? Or do they see this as a way to kill OTA?

Isn't that the problem though. Yes, the DVR and Netflix killed my ability to withstand commercials, but how does a local broadcaster survive without ad revenue?

looks like we only have 2 channels with DRM. sony just released the update for one of our t.v.s to activate the 3.0 tuner.. what about people that don't have a built in 3.0 tuner there's like no converter boxes that are worth a damm they all have issues with the drm

Second shrift to non profits and independents.

Will LG cave? Others drop ATSC 3 tuners?

Suspicious, I am, about how this decision came about.
after the lawsuit if i was lg id'e let people just buy the converter boxes once there reliable. sony is still putting 3.0 tuners in there set and ofcourse there high ones!!! hopefully that will trickle down to the more budget sets fast
