The important factor is that the new writer has written some of the best TV dramas of the past few years ( Jekyl, Coupling (UK) ), as well as some of the best Doctor Who episodes over the past few years ( e.g. Blink, The Doctor Dances ).

I disagree a bit as the actor needs to fit the role look at Tom Baker who everyone thinks is still the Dr.
I didn't realize this writer was from Blink; that was one of my favorite episodes. I guess there's still a good chance it will be good. Just I'm so used to an older Dr that it looks strange to me to see such a young actor.

Yep, blink is by far my favorite episode from the new series of Doctor Who.
As far as the actor goes. As long as he embodies the Doctor core I think we'll be happy. Every actor has brought their own take on the character, but most have remained true to the underlying character.
The writers are what is truly important to this type of series. Not many can step in and do these types of shows and keep it true to the storyline.
I also really liked Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead ... which happens to be written by the same author as Blink - Steven Moffat ... where a future companion meets him.
