Thinking about changing out IRD

I am thinking about upgrading my Directv IRD to a HD Receiver. I heard that Directv does not let you buy a H21 or a H20 Receiver? I heard you have to rent the receiver? Anyone know if this is true?
I am willing to pay more for HD, but I do not want to rent a IRD! Ebay has some used receivers I was looking at, but I did not want to buy one only to have Directv say I have to rent one from them?

Yes, everyone is on the lease model these days, sorry to say.

If you are foolish you can buy a H21 directly from D* but why would you pay the high cost to say you own it. AT $99 for the lease upgrade fee it is expensive enough to lease.
